Hi guys,
Hoping to steal some of your knowledge.
Anyone know whats the best coil lock I can buy? I want a D lock as I believe they are the safest but in my block of flats,. we dont have anywhere I can secure my bike with a D lock as I cant get close enough to the railings with my bike so am gonna have to go down the coil route.
Cheers guys!

a 15mm thich coil lock can be cut in 15-20 seconds."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Look for 'Sold Secure" Gold standard locks.
such as: http://www.cyclestore.co.uk/productDeta ... ctID=10035

I can heartily recommend this:
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Abus_ ... 360022241/
Had one of the Oxford ones (as above), and though the chain is excellent, the padlock gave up the ghost after about 10 months of outdoor use - rusted up and sticking.
Had the Abus one (well, its predecessor) for over 2 years using it daily and it's still going strong.0 -

Those are great guys - thanks!
But....... I dont have much money after spending £500 on bike and accessories this month
Is there any gold standard ones below £40? or even decent silver standard ones? Sorry for being so cheap!0 -
toybhoy - in that case get one of the Oxford ones, and just be aware that you'll need a new padlock! You can use a D-Lock as a padlock with them...0
-
Will defo look into the Oxford ones then - thanks LiT and everyone.
If anyone have any recommendations on an Oxford bike chain under £40 then please let me know!0 -
Would this be any good?

Or this one?

How are these normally rated?0 -

The link that Alfablue posted above has the same lock for £6 less... and free delivery. Why don't you have a look at that?0 -
Oh yeah! Cool!
I will buy that now! Thanks very much everyone for your help.
Im loving this whole cycling thing! Been on my bike everyday for a 6 miles round trip to work.
Sometimes I wish I lived further away so I get more cycling time! So expensive though! I thought cycling would save me money. I started with setting aside £100 for a new bike ( I didnt know much about bikes 2 months ago!) and now am about £500 in and thats just on my Specialized Expedition Elite I use for commuting!
Im saving up for either a Specialized Sirrus Elite 2009 or a Specialized Allez 2009 for a little more fun!
I think i've got the cycling bug!!0 -
Is this the same as the one Alfablue posted?
http://www.cyclesuk.com/156-472013
Nearly half the price but am not sure if its the same.0 -
Hmmm, you have to do a lot of commuting before cycling saves money, given all the lovely kit we all want!0

Looks very similar. If 1m will be long enough then it doesn't matter wahat length it is - I only note this as they don't mention the length.
No idea what 'standard' these locks are, BTW0 -
They make 2 similar locks, the HD (Heavy duty) is 9.5mm chain, and the Barrier (10mm chain), and the Barrier has an integrated lock. The Barrier is available at upwards of £29.99.
I think the two (my link and yours) are the same. I think they are Sold Secure Silver. To be honest the Sold Secure ratings are only really of concern to insurance companies, their standards mean little in practice, and locks vary widely in theft protection even amongst Gold. This (and most other similarly priced locks) could be cut with long bolt cutters, but it should deter less well equipped and casual thieves.
For better than that you need to be spending beyond £70 for a chain lock and £60+ for a D Lock (Abus Granit X Plus 54, Kryptonite New York being the only two I would consider unless spending £100+).0 -
A selection of chains plus locks here which claim to be Sold Secure Gold

I got this one from Halfords of all places:
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_165637
Just over £30 and Sold Secure Gold. It's really heavy but I reckon that to be a god thing in a lock.
I've seen loads of videos on youtube where people show how easy is is to break open most locks but never one ike this. It's too thick to fit into the jaws of boltcutters and although you could fit a car jack in there, it'd completely mangle the bike.0 -

I've been commuting since September and consider myself 'on probation' til the end of August, but already I've been looking for my next bike (current one is a Trek T10) that I will get using the cycle2work scheme with my employer. At the moment my heart is set on a Vita, having trawled through 3 bike shops last weekend
Cycling is expensive though, I keep seeing all manner of things I never knew I wanted :oops:0 -
I got my Oxford in yesterday from CycleUK.
Excellent lock and very heavy duty. Exactly what I was looking for.
Thanks to everyone who helped.
And if you are looking for said chain, but from CycleUK. Its nearly half the price of the next cheapest and I got next day express delivery via Citylink for free!0 -

What length was it in the end? And did it have a Sold Secure rating?0 -
The chain was 1m and had a Sold Secure rating of Silver which for £15 is excellent!0
