the bit that keeps the chain away from your spokes, how important is this bit, ive never really paid much attention to it, but mine snapped today and i had to bin it. is it worth the hassle of.......well anything including writing this post
i spent all me money on whisky and beer!!!

    It is only relevant if your limit screw is not properly adjusted - if it is then the mech can't get into the spokes.

    it is there to stop the chain damaging the spoke elbows due to an over shift.

    It does not stop the mech going in the spokes.

    Yes, I stand corrected, am I right the limit screw will prevent overshifting?

    In any case I wouldn't bother fitting another, I haven't any on my bikes and no mishaps.

    Limit screw will stop overshifting, but it is possible to get the chain jammed down the back of the cassette... IIRC the newer Shimano cassettes have pins on the back of the biggest cog to help prevent this.
