I know you can buy Surly and other spanners that bolt on your bike via the bottle bosses but I'm a cheapskate that can run to spending a fiver on a 15mm combi spanner from his LCAS. Now have it mounted on the frame courtesy of some odds n ends I had in the kitchen cupboard, most people call this their shed etc but my 1st floor flat doesn't have a shed.

1 15mm spanner
1 ahead top cap
1 chainring nut
length of herringbone bar tape
1 Shortened Toestrap

I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Just carry a small 15mm cone spanner - bought an extra set when I picked up the fixed on Saturday. Just small enough to go in Rucksack side pocket, or with spare tube when not commuting.

The whole 15mm spanner thing is definitely an issue when riding fixed: you need to strike the balance between the handle being long enough to provide sufficient leverage, and yet short enough to be unobtrusively portable. Otherwise you might as well not bother carrying a unscheduled deflation recovery kit.

Do you lock the bike up with the spanner still attached? I'd have thought supplying the local chavs with the means to remove your wheels wasn't the best idea.

    Fair point!

I'm wondering if the space between the saddle rails and inside the saddle might not accomodate a 15mm spanner... a little more subtle than bolting it to the frame as well!

    That would probably work...

Wasn't someone talking about attaching a frame fit pump with duck tape? You could use enough to cover the spanner completely. Mind, you'd have a lumpy looking bike.

Not ventured out into the big wide world with it yet, though I did go to work with another 15mm spanner in my bag JIC. Don't intend to leave it on the bike when locked up but when I do lock up my bike I lock through the back wheel anyway.

Alas, the space under the saddle is too small.

I bungee'd it to my pannier rack.

    Job's a good'un.
