I am in the market for some new shoes, i would rather not spend lots of money if it can be avoided, but is it worth it? Does the extra stiffness that comes with higher end shoes make much difference? Obviously comfort is a large factor, but beyound that what is the advantage of spending more?
Thanks

Weight, stiffness, quality of fastening, elimination of 'hot spots' all seem to get better with better shoes...0

I have a pair of Road and a pair of MTB Specialized shoes, I like them a lot, both are the top of the range carbon soled jobbies. On the road side though I usually use my Sidi Geniuses which are brilliant. The Spesh ones are lighter and more bling though...0

Cheaper here for those specialized ones -

There is a big difference between cheap and expensive shoes. I commute on Shimano R075s and they're ok but when i use my Shimano R220s the difference is instantly noticable. The sole is so much stiffer you can feel all the power being put through the pedal stroke and not being wasted by flexing.0

I have ridden for 3 years on Spesh MTB Comps (non - carbon sole) but treated myself (in the sale) to some Shimano R131 carbon soled shoes. The new shoes are definitely stiffer but I'm not sure just how much extra power is actually being transferred to the bike.0

I've had entry level Shimano shoes and high end ones. The carbon soled versions are noticeably stiffer, which is to be expected, but don't really differ in terms of comfort. They do have better ventilation, so that may be a consideration for you.0

As well as being stiffer and lighter, the thinner carbon sole generally brings the foot closer to the pedal. For general riding and training you might actually want a shoe with a bit of 'give', the shoes I use for racing - Northwave Aerator are a bit uncomfortable after 2-3 hours and I prefer my Sidis for longer rides.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

so given up to £100 but prefer to spend less, people recommend specialised or sidi?
Also, does anyone know how to specialised sizing compares to sidi, i am slightly to big for a 44 specialised, i know some manufacturers come out a little small or big, would i be a 44.5 sidi, maybe 45?0 -

I think i have narrowed it down to Specialised pro 08 for £100 or Sidi Genius 5 08 model for £65, any advice between these two shoes?0

Apparently Specialized are bigger sizes than other manufacturers especially width wise0

Only advice I would give is to try them on for fit. Its comfort you are after - not saving a couple of quid. Shoes do make a huge difference.0

I'd try the sidis on first, they can be quite narrow... I am normally a 10 in shoes/trainers, but both my bike shoes are 45s.
Specialized Pros here (carbon sole) for 100 (normally 140) in a 45

The 2008 5.1s at 64 quid are an incredible deal though!

Last month's (or maybe the month before) C+ had a review of shoes for <£100. I think the winner was the Mavic Avenir, the review is here:

Other ones that did well were the Specialized pair for about £100, and the Shimano offering.FTT
