I know he's good, but I'm not keen on him.

I agree. A BRILLIANT TOP CLASS TALENT who deserves all the success in the world.. However personality wise I don't really like him. Also stop wearing those white sunglasses please.0

An outstanding talent who has had to demonstrate at every level that he really is as good as he says he is. Not a very "British" way of doing things and it clearly riles some people. He doesn't seem to do false modesty and I find his openess refreshing. Too many of our sportsmen fail to deliver, lets applaud one who does. The older I get the faster I was0

How he comes across in the Media has jack to do with it. Surely all were interested in is how he does on the road/track? That's all that matters right. In 10-15 years he'll only be remebered by what he achieved in his career and little else?
At the end of the day the Media can make him look how ever they want."I spend my petrol money on Bikes, Beer, Pizza, and Donuts "

Some people collect scalps.. he collects human hands (see article on him in this months C+ I think - look closely at one of the photos )0

Personally, I think he comes across as open and honest, and generally a nice guy. Unlike David Millar.0
-
Cav comes accross as a really genuine guy, somebody who would probably be good to have around whether it was cycling related or not.
You can stick all your nice guy losers and tupperware tits celebreties who are coached into saying all the right things at the right time, I prefer the real deal.0 -

He's no Tim Henman.0 -

Exactly, he's not as Brit, he's from the Isle of Mann.0 -
I'd put Cav in the same catergory as Armstrong. Both good riders but cant stand either of them.
Neither are as gentalmanly as our F1 hero's Hamillton and Button and my all time favorite Mansell.0 -
Hamilton is a groomed for the press robot IMO.
I love the way Cav says what he thinks...0 -
In an era of spin (politics / business and sport) its great to have a kid who tells it as he see's it... its not about saying the right thing its about doing it... and Cavendish is doing it big time0
-
I'm sure i heard it correctly..... but when Cav was presented with one of his pink jerseys at the Giro, the PA announcer referred to him a Mark "Cannonball" Cavendish!!!
A quality nickname! Although it pains me that he seems to be more popular in Italy than in the UK.
The guy is a born winner, and says it how he sees it... a bit like a certain Mr McEwen
Keep up the good work Cav!0 -
that is until you ask him about his dancing!!!!"you tried your best and failed miserably. the lesson is never to try"0

TBH I've never heard him being interviewed. If however he comes over as arrogant or big headed, so what, he's one of the best in the world at what he does, he's entitled to have that large ego.
We all know folks who give it the large, when in actual fact they're not really a lot better than the ordinary joe (they may be a good club cyclist or whatever) so what. Cavendish does it at the very top level where it counts, and until somebody can shut him up on the road, he cand be as arrogant (as some percieve him to be) as he likes in my book.
Not that I think arrogance is a particularly endearing virtue, but if you are the best in the world at something, well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Tail end Charlie

Is that the Hamilton that told lies to gat a fellow racer disqualified the other day? Or Tyler Hamilton the Cyclist from the USA? (banned)The older I get the faster I was0

Frank, he comes across really well on interview. Eurosport did an hours programme on him last year which had a long interview then he talked through each of his 4 Tour wins using the overhead footage, like he was giving a lecture or sprinting masterclass. It is one of the best, if not the best, cycling programmes I've seen.0

I think you've just said it all there my owd.Tail end Charlie

Of course he is not going to be any good doing intelligent coherent interviews, he's from the IoM, what do you expect from an inbread.
Dam good sprinter though0 -
He's a great rider, speaks his mind and isn't coached unlike Lewis Hamilton who's a PR robot.
Cav reminds me of motorbike racer Guy Martin, they just say it as they see it.
Good on them I say. It'll make cycling a bit more interestingwww.icenivelo.co.uk - Norfolks most inclusive cycling club0 -
Nice to have some proper rivalry too, such as the comments he made about Garmin. It was all taken in the right spirit by all concerned too...0
-
Cav's one of the best out there, he says he can do things, and then does it. Give him a couple more years and he will be the best!"Train your weaknesses, race your strengths."0
-
I actually like him, and arrogance is normally something I can't stand.
I think it's because he just says his mind, he doesn't make a big deal out of it, but if someone asks him who the best is, he'll say "me". He'll always praise his team and credit them with his success. It's all good in my book. I'd like to see him given more credit here though, his point about Olympic golds is correct. The fact he's arguably the top british sportsperson at the moment, and nobody has really heard of him is a bit off.
And the Tim Henman bashing... he was the 4th best player in the world at one point! Not too shabby!http://www.KOWONO.com - Design-Led home furniture and accessories.0 -
I met him last year and he was actually quite shy in person. And this was right after the Tour last year when he was on a big high.
Nice guy and he can come across as arrogant if he wants - he backs it up.0 -
I've read through all the comments and there are some strong, well balanced and coherent reasons for commending Mark Cavendish
still don't like him though...0 -
