You try cutting bunches of bananas down. It is hard and horrible work. It is very hot, you get soaked in banana and snake pee and bitten by venomous snakes and spiders that hide in the huge bunches for warmth wrapping themselves around the fronds. As the huge bunches some 4 or 5 feet tall weighing 100+kg drop onto your shoulder hammering you into the ground you're trying to get your balance and not fall over, the snakes wake up and spiders bite into your neck, shoulder and arms as you carry them to a waiting trailer. It is best to have have a dog alongside who can sense which bunches have snakes. I lost the skin on both my shoulders despite wearing a leather pad to protect them and my neck area, but fortunately I never got bit by a snake as my machette took care of several after barking from the dog. A few did get through though sliding across the packing room floor only to be pounced on by the dogs. The worst job I have ever done by far. I lasted only 6 weeks. I now look at bananas in a totally different light and certainly check for spiders before I stick my fingers in bunches to pick them up.Life is like a roll of toilet paper; long and useful, but always ends at the wrong moment. Anon.
