Calling on the wealth of knowledge of all you bike radarists, my step brother has been bitten by the bug after coming out riding on friday, the thing is he has set a budget of 600 quid, looking for something which will be xc orientated (he's a new rider he wont be doing 6 foot drop offs) I have found a couple of reduced bikes like the giant yukon fx2 a mongoose otero elite and a coyote team sr.
does anyone know of any cracking deals ? It doesnt have to be this years model, I just want to find the best bike for his money and I know going back a year or two may well find him riding a better specced bike.
All replies apreciated - thanks !!

Most are going to be 5 or 6 lbs more than an hardtail, but check this out:

If you can break the budget this looks the dogs:

6lb frame! Incredible for that money.0 -
Good thinking Ben! ;-)0

to be honest at £600 even a reduced in the sale full susser would be overkill for a newbie riding general XC stuff, hardtails teach you to ride better & are much better specced & a lot lighter.
The mongoose looks ok for the money, but has 24spd gears & poor brakes.
have you had a look at the sticky about full sussers at the top of the buying page?0 -

Then again I would not touch a Full suss for under 1000.00 unless some serious upgrading is to be done.
He can get a real decent HT for that cash.0 -
Oh you beat me.
Cant beat that Giant for the price... God thats cheap
Decent spec as well0 -

yeah sorry i should of said 18 0r 19 inch frame !0
-
yes the trance is amazing but the frames too small unfortunately!!
canada i know what your saying, but he came out with me on friday and we hired a hardtail for him and he rode mine as well and said he preferred the comfort of a fs and felt more in control. which is fair enough its what he prefers the feel of at the end of the day, I saw that proflex 668 as well thought it looked ok and be one nirvana ( believe it or not that was £579 the other week !!!!).
Also I hear what your saying about full sussers under a grand thats why im asking for suggestions for reduced bargains hopefully finding something that rrp'd for around or just over the £1000 mark.0 -
Hard to say if it will be too small without trying unfortunately.
What about seeing what the local shops have?0 -
Yeah, he's same height as me sonic and im just over 6 foot, I like the look of the yukon fx1 that canada found - yeah i've had a look round a few local shops before but you cant beat internet prices.0

Just over budget:

I really disagree with this statement because its the guys first bike, there are some decent bikes out there to be had for the money and to be honest as a first bike surely you;d be concentrating more on learning to ride it, not upgrading.
I think a full sus would give him confidence and some fine examples like the Giant that ben and Supersonic posted would be fine for a new rider without upgrading. rock shox forks, hydro brakes, Fox rear shock, nothing wrong with it at all if only a few pounds heavier than one would be if it was a bit more expensive.0 -
Plus he'll be coming out with me and my bikes not exactly top spec it's a 2004 kona dawg matic and we all no how much technology has filtered down, my bike retailed at around 1400 quid 5 years ago but I would place most of these suggestions as better specced performance wise.0

what about that be one nirvana you mentioned to me a while back geordie? (but it has gone up in price)

yeah someone posted it again on here mate - i noticed it went up in price again - i cant find any reviews on that bike although other versions get decent write ups, it was (around) £579 which to me was a steal for a bike that spec !!
The reason im asking I wasnt sure how much he wanted to spend but he sent me a link asking my opinion on a claud butler shamen for about 570 and I know he can find a better bike for that kind of money it got a poor review off bike radar and the spec isnt brilliant.0 -
TBH
I am 5,10 and inside of 30"
And am a medium, but got a focus superbud 2008 in a small, kinda by mistake.
I love it, so easy to chuck around and find it great on the road.
I did say under a 1000 I would not think about it  , until I saw all the giants and stuff on offer at that pauls cycles.
600.00 you should be able to get something good, and we have only looked for a couple hours.
Do somemore digging and you might get an amazing bike0 -
+1 For the Teocali Comp. Got one and it is very good. Great traction climbing and good downhill.
I agree with the sentiment that starting on a hardtail makes you learn better technique (been riding mountain bikes 14 years, 11 of which were on a fully rigid bike) but I would say it is most important to get out there and have fun and i reckon the Teocali fits the bill.
If he becomes obsessed he will probably end up 'upgrading' to a single speed rigid steel bike eventuallyShot by both sides...0 -
The teocali comp is a fantastic bike for the money but if you don;t need all the suspension travel, slack geometary (what sold it to me) and are on a budget last years otero super http://www.paulscycles.co.uk/products.p ... 1b2s1p1498 seems like a bargain.-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_

Why are MTB economics; spend twice as much as you intended, but only half as much as you wish you could afford? :roll:0 -
didn't someone say they picked up a GT idrive for £550 at halfords (last years model). Might be worth giving halfords a call to see if they have any in stock still.0
-
i would strongly recommend against the Mongoose Otero, i had one breifly and couldnt wait to get rid of it, it just didnt feel right at all... It was OK uphills and on the flat, any small bumps it could not really handle. At first i thought it was just set up wrong, but it turned out not to be at all...0
-
Well he settled on the giant yukon fx1 so hopefully that will fit the bill - it looks a cracking bike with decent spec and was reduced by 340 quid - and im happy coz i've got a mountain bike buddy !! http://www.paulscycles.co.uk/products.p ... 748&z=1988
Knowing my brother though it wont be long til he starts blinging it up - im gonna have to get myself into gear and buy some new forks coz i know for a fact those toras are better than mine lol !!
Shows how easy it is to be bitten by the bug though he's only been out with me twice, once on a hardrock hire bike from his local gym mainly stuck to bridlepaths and the second time in hamsterly forest in the pouring rain which i thought might of put him off but he loved it !!!!0 -

The super or the eilte? as the forks on the eilte aren't great and the drivetrain just about okay, but the super seems to cover those bases? I only ask because the super was on my list when I got the teocali comp.-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_

I know you probably won't like this but Halfords have 20%off all there GT bikes and this means the budget FS comes in at £800 looks like a bit of a bargain as it looked good at 1000.
however I would go for a HT well fitted from a lbs
good luck0
