I eventually chose Shimano SPD A 520 pedals and Shimano SPD road/ leisure shoes to match, as they seemed to suit me as a new user and I could walk in the shoes with their recessed cleats. They also fitted my narrow foot well.
Every rider seems to have their own favourite combination of pedals and shoes but all I can say is go into your local helpful bike shop and try the shoes on - the same as you would with any other shoes.
Clips can take a while to get used to but now I woudn't use anything else.
Shimano/sidi tend to have a narrower to fit than the specialized so steer clear of spesh without trying them on though they do make the best shoes as far as I'm concerned.

Good luck to you.
