Anyone know of a hub geared 24" , rigid forked, ally, bike availlable in UK? or will I have to get something with dodgy front sus, and derailleurs?

Depends on your budget, but I suspect that you'll only find them somewhere on the continong, probably Holland/Denwmark or wherever
I won't mention Islabikes, even if they don't do kids bikes with dodgy suspension. That's exactly the sort of thing I was thinking of - but quite a price tag. I suppose hubgear = +£1000
