Cheers xcracer, is the pedal area big enough to ride with just your trainers on or do you have to get the "clip in, to make it into a pedal" there will be times when i'll call round to one of the lads and don't want to put the spd shoes on, the shimano 324 looks like a bigger surface area to me or is it just the picture

the M324's are a royal pain in the arse, they're not really an off road pedal, designed for touring.

if you want to use the flat side you have to flip the pedal over as they rest with the SPD side up, so every time you take your foot off the pedal you have to faff about with them

there are no good compromises between flat & SPD pedals, you have to choose one or the other or keep swapping pedals

the M520 is the best budget SPD pedal there is

Shoes, you really need to go to a shop & try shoes on, Shimano & Northwave tend to be narrow, Specialized are very good shoes (for me as they fit spot on)

What ever you do DO NOT buy those starter pedals they are rubbish!!! Go full spd and in the beginning just learn to unclip way before u plan to stop. It's not rocket science honest.

I chose the M520's as my first SPD'S and so far they have served me very well. Think I only paid £18 for them off Ebay which I thought was a bargain considering they get excellent reviews.

i went for my first SPD ride this morning and have been bricking it since i bought them 3 days ago! i fitted the pedals and had a quick test round the garden... no off`s, but i knew in the big wide world it would be different.
how wrong could i be!! the weather was awful this mornin, strong wind, heavy rain (all started 5 mins after i left the house!) and all you need to do is, remember to unclip before you come to a stand still. clipping back in takes a bit of getting used to but once 1 foot is clipped in, you can actually pedal one footed til you get the 2nd foot clipped in, its a bloody doddle! and the confidence it gives you is awesome.
    i went for the:

Thanks again lads for all your help, pedals are sorted one of the lads has give me some of his trek bike, i think they are a make called "candy" they are brand new, when he bought his bike he got shimano ones fitted.

kopite did you get your usual shoe size when you bought them or did you have to go a size bigger like people say when you buy the shimano's 'cos of the narrow fit

    cheers lads

  • Ive got size 8.5 but I'm size 9.5 in general. Problem is Ive got a very thin feet and use thinnish socks when riding (however I paid quite alot for my shoes so the strap on it tightens the shoe really well). Therefore I'd try some on in your LBS if you are planning to buy on internet
