When I went to have a look at some of the lucky candidates to have made it to my road bike shortlist this afternoon, the guy in the LBS told me that they'd sold out the Spesh Allez Elite, and that they weren't gonna get any new ones in. He explained that Specialized made a big mistake in estimating how many of these babies they were going to sell, and are now having to bring in new models -- which is supposed to happen in about 5 weeks :o I think he said that the same applies to the Tarmac and Roubaix.

Has anyone else heard this? Is it true to or just a rumour? The salesman struck me as reliable and knowledgeable... If it's true, I wonder if it might be worth waiting 5 weeks to see what's new. Getting an 2010 model as early as June seems tempting 8)!

I'd like to think that if a shope were about to take delivery of new models in a mere 5 weeks then they'd know about it. On the other hand, nothing whatsoever on the Specialized website. I'd have thought that they would announce new models more than 5 weeks in advance. Maybe the LBS is taking delivery of the same bikes, but Spesh have altered the spec somewhow (ie different tyres and/or wheels)?

I'd heard something from another shop which had sold out of a lot of road bikes.

But they said it might be the Autumn before they had certain models back in stock.

It seems a number of manufacturers of road bikes have under estimated demand

  • Somebody's suggested to me that manufacturers like Specialized and also Trek have underestimated the impact on the UK market of the successes in the Olympics and world championships, and also of the Cycle to Work scheme. Seems plausible!

Be curious to see what's gonna happen, but I don't intend to sit on my (a)$$ and wait for 5 weeks before I buy something!

Last year it was late Aug/early Sept before the 2009 Spesh and Trek bikes started to trickle into the shops and with a big price increase.

My LBS too said that demand has been high, so Specialized are bringing their 2010 range forward a couple of months. Normally out in August so should see them trickling out next month.
There's no such thing as too old.
