Ok Folks, I've just put in an order for this (f+f)

Question now is, which groupset? I'm no weight weenie (it IS steel) but was wondering whether the premium for the new 11 speed Athena (£805 with alloy cranks) was worth it over Centaur (£450 I guess?) - or if I'm going to spend that kind of money, perhaps NOS 10 speed Record would be better? Or is there any value in mixing and matching (it will take them a couple of months to build so no particular rush)

The bike will obviously be for best, sportives etc - so not 1000s of yukky miles every year.

Advice welcome!
Cal
PS I'm not expecting anyone to mention either 'S' word in this thread...

Its got to be something alloy to fit in with the look, the Athena looks good and you're getting something up to date tech wise

Geoffrey Butler Cycles have NOS Alloy Campag Record Cranks for bargainous prices, I wouldn't go with carbon or black metal on it.
Some silver Veloce shifters etc and away you go!

Having just spotted Athena in the comic I'd go with that if you've got the money, but ditch the shifters as that carbon wrap is horrid. Not sure which campag egos are still metal so can't help there, or how abouts down tube shifters for the real retro look ;-)

No I'd just fall off. Although perhaps some of those 'Hudz' rubber ergop covers in Honey... or are they horrid?

  • I would go with the all alloy version of centaur because of the alloy levers rather than the carbon. The shape of the new ergos is also really good if they fit your hands.
