Hi ,

I'm well aware this is one of the items that divides people and there are a whole bunch of pros and cons to be taken into consideration .

that aside can any one recommend a compact & reliable CO2 unit that i can use on up and coming sportive rides over the summer ( my " micro pump " is ok but it takes forever to get full PSI if at all ) .

i have used a basic one in the past with just a screw on head unit , have they developed much since or is it pretty much a case of dont C*ck it up when your doing it or your walking home still ?

regards

Paul

I've had various types and never had a problem with any of them.

I use one of the proflate ones, the cylinder gets locked into the head and there is a double safety to stop accidental discharge.

Cap keeps the valve seal clean so it works and there is a trigger for co2 release.

Hi, i use a Innovations Ultraflate Plus CO2 pump and recommend it.

I think as long as the pump screws onto the value and you have a trigger to control when to release the gas, you can't go far wrong. but I would still always carry a mini pump just in case.

I got a Planet-X carbon CO2 inflater and mini-pump combined. Cost me only £10 in a sale (currently £15). Used it for the first time last weekend, worked a treat! The mini-pump would be quite feeble, but it gives me a backup if I use up the CO2. There is no trigger to operate it, just discharged the whole cylinder, but a 12g one inflated a 700x23 perfectly. It comes with a bracket and it fits neatly behind my seat tube bottle cage. I have an extra velcro strap round it for security.

I keep the C02 cylinder inside my hollow crank/BB (I have a very tiny seat pack that won't take a cylinder as well as the other essentials). I had bought a Barbieri kit that allowed you to fit the cylinders in the end of your bars, but the bars curved too near the end, so the gaping chasm in my BB gave me the idea. The end caps supplied make a very neat fit, works a treat.

It apparently won a C+ award.

Ah, you meant BIKE! Doh! I honestly didn't think it was a typo  I am demob happy but frazzled Friday thinking!

I had never heard bile being described as shiny, but was prepared to go along with the idea :)

I just had to get one of those pumps to go with my P-X carbon bike!

Its about 16cm long, it would go in a jersey pocket but might stick out a bit. I honestly didn't expect much from it, I was mostly seduced by it being carbon like the bike, and £10. Used it for the first time at the weekend (g/f's front tyre had a blow out at 30mph, because I fitted it carelessly , haven't owned up yet). I only used the pump part to put a little air in to fit the tube, did the job. Then when fitted, screwed in the cartridge and hey presto, one very fully inflated tyre! No fuss, just worked. I didn't even realise it had worked, no whoosh noise, no frozen hands (I have never used a CO2 before so didn't know what to expect).

So, they actually function very well. I wouldn't ride without a pump, so this combined one is ideal. I reckon I would be able to get reasonable "get you home" pressure if using the pump.

When touring I take a Topeak Turbo Morph as I am not worried about weight or size, but for day rides on the P-X this is ideal IMHO, and it took a lot of time and effort out of the operation.

It is available for £12.27 posted, here

Well, its nothing fancy (apart from the carbon tube) but doing both jobs in a compact cheap way that actually works, I'm happy. The other combined pump/CO2 things I found were bigger and more expensive. I'm not against paying loads of dosh for the right item (far from it!), but this seemed to meet my needs. Looks very discrete behind my bottle cage.
