Levers- double, triple or both?

Hi, i've found some Ultegra STI shifters they say they were from a bike with a double set up. When i searched for these in shops they say double and triple compatible. How are you supposed to know if they will work on a triple?
They are the Shimano Ultegra 6500 STI shifters.
Would these work on a triple or exclusively for double chainsets?

18 speed with 6500 front & rear derailleurs, 27 speed with 6503 mechs - but ST-6500 shifters in both cases.
I have some ST-6510 fitted triple on my Winter bike which came off a friend's double bike.
- I think (don't know...) that the only difference is that 6510 will run Flightdeck computers but 6500 didn't0 -
