Apologies to any who thinks this post belongs elsewhere. I could not see anywhere specific and I guess a lot of readers of this sub-forum can help.

I am seeking a lightly trafficked route that includes the Beacon. Assume departure point is Putney Bridge but in reality I will probably take a train until I am clear of the mayhem on our city's roads.

I did this route last Sunday and found it rather pleasant with little traffic:

    You're in the right place.
The BHF London-Brighton route is probably the best. Fairly quiet and takes you over the Beacon.

Many thanks for the routes. I did not think this one through; complex route finding and lack of Garmin GPS is probably a frustrating combination. so I will have to allow some contingency time.

nip over to bikely or bikehike and search on FNRttC (short for Friday night run to the coast) should find some useful L2B routes on there including the one we did last Friday night.

This one starts from East Croydon station and deliberately avoids busy roads as much as possible whilst still being fairly direct.

There is also a return journey that has some good climbs towards the end:

String both together for a day of sportive training.

p.s. An alternative route down that has nice relatively uninterrupted sections of quiet roads for fast group riding, and goes over nearby Devil's Dyke instead of Ditchling Beacon:

that route changed for the official ride from 2005; it now goes via Lindfield and Haywards Heath and is nowhere near as nice, but the 2004 (even going via Streat and Westmeston as an alternative to Ditchling village) is much nicer and quieter if you are riding on any other day

Rich Ti : I suppose that it is all done and dusted. I had a commitment to a father(that's me) and son tennis tournament today but if ever again in the future .....I will be happy to join a group.

NWLondoner: happy to try BtoL particularly mid week. PM me if you wish
