Great idea!! I'd sign it but not a UK resident. Even my dimwitted Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger-(how the hell is it spelled??) saw fit to ban cell phone use while driving and made it a law in California.

What do you mean by 'a duty to sign'? If I am not in the UK but if I were - NO.
Why not start other moronic petitions to ban the following:-
Glass - it can break and cut people.
Tile floors – people can slip on them.
    Matches – can cause fires.
Pretty girls – can be distracting to road users.
Pens & pencils – people can write naughty things with them.
Doors – you can trap your fingers in them.
Coffee & tea – hot and can scald you.
Dihydogen monoxide – very dangerous substance.
Electricity – it can be shocking.
    Food – causes obesity.
Rain & wind – very hazardous to road users.
    Ice – very slippery.
Breathing – people can pick up diseases from breathing.
Bicycles – people can fall off and hurt thenselves

Excuse me but NONE of the above are illegal.

It is ILLEGAL un the UK to use a HANDHELD MOBILE phone while driving!! The reason for the band was the amount of accidents being caused by drivers not being in full control of a 2 tonne vehicle nor concentrating properly.

So yes if a driver is caught then they need to be punished properly and not just given a slap on the wrist.

WTF? The petition is not to ban mobile phones, but to increase the penalties to people using handheld mobile phones whilst driving, which although illegal, is hardly rigorously enforced by the Police.

    Signed.

Mobile phones seriously reduce peoples ability to concentrate on driving a vehicle. There is no way anyone could argue a case against this. That is why it is illegal to use one whilst driving.

I do think the petition is a bit of a waste of time though. The reality is that people will keep using them no matter what the penalty because they know the chance of being caught is so low. The petition should be calling for more police to be out on the roads pulling over drivers for bad driving. Video evidence from un marked cars should be allowed to prosecute people who drive too aggressively, hog middle lanes, drive too slowly, drive too quickly etc. I see so many cases of bad driving but can barely remember the last time I saw a police car on patrol.

Harsher sentences are already being given out to drivers who maim or kill and have been shown to be using a mobile phone at the time. It has been broadcast in the news. People keep on using them. A law is no good unless it is enforced.

I signed it, but I would go further.

red light jumping, speeding, all that stuff should be more rigorously enforced.

there seems to be a culture of....everyone does it and i am unlikely to get caught for it.

edit* I also think these rules should be more rigorously enforced for all road users, including cyclists.

Signed, but I agree with some of the above posts that this coudl get signed by everyone in the country and it still won't do any good. Why? My sister was rear-ended in her car by a girl who straight away admitted she was texting. Police came along and my sis pointed this out to the guys but when they put it to the girl, she instantly denied it. I know some of our coppers work damn hard but on this occasion a minor RTA seemingly did not warrant trawling through phone records etc and, to be honest, I can understand this.

So, moral of the story, unless the accident is significant (ie someone dies?) then all a driver need do is deny using their phones at the time.

On my commute home I pass a very long line of slow moving traffic. On average about 1 in 10 are on the phone. When my way is blocked, chances are they are texting and not looking in the mirrors. The plod could have a field day writing tickets, but alas, they don't.

Done, though won't hold my breath!

4 weeks ago I was driving along and this **** turned out of a side road and pulled straight infront of my car, I had to slam the brakes on and avoided the collision by centimetres. I saw he was on the phone, I remonstrated and made a phone gesture. At the next set of lights he got out of his car an came to mine, tried to open my door but I locked it in time. He then drew his elbow back and tried to smash my window, giving it a tremendous blow, fortunately it held, but I was cowering. I can only imagine (in horror) what he planned for me! Reported to police, they will put the car on observation, whatever that means. It scared the life out of me, and is more evidence that some people not only think phone use is fine when driving, but seem to be affronted when criticised.

Of course, I could be a complete hypocrite by taking the photo (even though stationary), I would never text or call however.
