Well, I didn't manage to get out until much later than planned, and not for nearly as long.
Don't really feel like I achieved much as more water was thrown up from the road than it was down from the skies.
But.....several positive things have come as a result of the days events. I now have full speed broasdband, without having to hold my dongle out of the window.
And, I've managed to secure a job interview for first thing tomorrow.
Also, I've very quickly had to make arrangements for an unexpected trip to North Wales tomorrow, straight after the interview.
I read your post in the womens section SpinningJeny. Good luck with the ride, and the alarm. I can strongly recommend Johnsons Baby Wipes for cleaning the bike, after you've got the worst off with a hose.
Ah well, sorry that I didn't quite achieve the downpour that I way hoping for, but worth a try, eh.0 -
Ah Sunday.......got woken with a start by the missus after my nightshift so that we could attend a 3 o'clock memorial service for Polish WW2 fighter pilots that were stationed at Chailey. Off we went in the car to The Plough at Plumpton Green for a lovely lunch and a very nice service attended by loads of old RAF and British Legion folk. What struck me though was what wonderful countryside we have on our doorstep, a feeling heightened by the marvelous if unexpected sunshine. I got home to plot some routes to explore on my OS maps.Start Weight: 128 kilos (20.2 st) (April 17th 2009)
Current Weight:119 kilos (18.7 st) (June 18th 2009)
Target Weight: 92 kilos (14.5 st) (sometime mid-2010, hopefully sooner)0 -
Andy - I'm glad you don't have to dangle your dongle out of the windown any more - that could have been dangerous!
Top banana on the interview - very best of luck with it! Good luck on your unexpected trip too!
Thanks for the tip on baby wipes - that's something I wouldn't have though of at all!
And stop lurking behind the scenes on Women's - we do allow the guys in you know - for a fee
RHS - my OH used to be in the RAF, so much respect to you. And yes, the countryside is wonderful!Ned Flanders: “You were bicycling two abreast?”

Was googling for Brighton MTB things and found this so thought I'd join up. Moved to Patcham just over a year ago having been living closer into the centre before and have thus finally got a moutain bike again - seemed like folly to not have one when the South Downs are about 5 minutes ride away!

Hi,
Since I'm in hove am I allowed to join? I'll ride at the back, 5 bike lengths behind!
I joined the sustrans ride this morning with my 4 year old boy - he was on the trail-a-bike. It was a lovely ride.0 -
Hi Russ,
Not sure who owns this thread, certainly not me, but welcome aboard. I'm in Hove too, and no one seems to mind0 -
yeah, we give you a 'let' for almost making into Brighton
as for owning the thread, well, i don't think there is an owner - in true Brighton & Hove stylee....
so yes, welcome from me too. glad you enjoyed the sustrans ride. was that what they were out touting for on Saturday? i would have stopped, but i was on my way back home and needed an errrm, wee!Ned Flanders: “You were bicycling two abreast?”

Took the new bike out for its first proper outing on Sunday. Went from the Asda roundabout, up to Stanmer, down the forest road (speedbump almost caught me out badly!) up NNE towards the SDW, back along past Ditching Beacon and then southwards down past the Chattri. Hour and half. Very impressed with the sheer speed of the new bike, am being far too slow downhill due to being totally out of practice and too used to my Brompton which will throw you on the ground at the mere sight of a pebble. Need to adjust the fork a lot, it's far too stiff at the moment, and also tweak the gears a bit.
Alex0 -
ooh ooh ooh - that sounds like a great route... hmm.... i've not been up to stanmer yet. but i'm liking the look of that park, i have to say...
and as for speed - it will come
i was probably cycling out of my ability and comfort range on a downhill/loose flint combi on saturday, but it was, like, totally awesome, dude
( i don't talk like that, it was just that by the time i'd got to the bottom, i felt as if i'd regressed 20 years and was a mere pup of a teenager again! that feeling of losing your back wheel on loose path is such a fun thing to do.........!)Ned Flanders: “You were bicycling two abreast?”

Sounds like fun to be had in stanmer.
I'm off to there tomorrow evening. Found some lads and lasses who ride round there every Thursday, often on Saturday, and other evenings when they can. So I'm off for a first ride with them tomorrow and a first proper thrash of my new bike - Boardman Pro FS.
Will report back about route, bike and injuries0 -
oh enjoy!
i only badged up a smallish bruise on my left shin (pedal!) and strange sunburn markings from the weekend.
hope your bike is all you want it to be!Ned Flanders: “You were bicycling two abreast?”

Thanks Jenny - I'm already loving my bike. I think the countryside, scenery and weather help though. I've been up to Devils Dyke a few times with it and really enjoyed that.
Tomorrow will be the first real test of the suspension though. And more to the point the first real test of my nerve! The brakes are very lively, so if I back off too much and hit the anchors I'll be over the top before you know it. Gulp0 -
ah yes, the OTT manoeuvre....
i'm sure i'll be doing that at some point
i did the old 'feathering' on the brakes on my massive downhill (i'm sure it wasn't that massive really, but damn it got my heart racing. look at the track, not the scenery....lol)Ned Flanders: “You were bicycling two abreast?”
Homer Simpson: “I wish. We were bicycling to a lake.”

Does anyone fancy a short ride up to the Dyke one evening. Stopping for some light refreshments before heading back?
Not too much drinking though, especially on a school night!0 -
Sounds good to me. Probably have to be next week though, or possibly thursday. Might be best to see what the weather does before planning too far ahead
Aren't we supposed to be having thunder storms or something?0 -
hey guys
any other week but next week i'll be up for a ride, so long as Portslade is acceptable to you central bods!0 -
Portslade - the back of beyond
Not really - I've been through there on my way to the Downs Link/South Downs and I think that's where the OH gets the car washed tooNed Flanders: “You were bicycling two abreast?”

I have to admit that the old Dyke railway is a stones throw from my house which makes an evening ride up to the Dyke pub for a drink viable0
-
Evening ride sounds great while we have the weather. What time have you got in mind for heading off? Next week - Monday & Wednesday look good for me.
Stanmer was fantastic last night. Met a guy who is involved with brightonmtb, and they have made a lot of their own single track runs. What a great effort on their part. Lot's of logs, jumps, descents, with fast sections too. I have scratches (wear long sleeves next time), bruises courtesy of two unintentional dismounts (yes I fell off) and a profound gratitude to the makers of cycle helmets, without whom I would have a very sore head thanks to a tree that jumped out at me. Enjoyed the jumps best, getting some air, woohoo. Off again tomorrow night
I think I have just discovered what my bike was built for.0 -

This sounds fantastic! Whereabouts in Stanmer are these runs, am I likely to come across them by accident or do you need to be in the know?
Alex0 -
Some of the runs are easy to find, other are definitely not. These guys go out together every Thursday and some Saturdays and I'm off with them again tomorrow. They are at Brightonmtb.org.
One of the guys behind the site (Mike) took me round their runs yesterday. As a newbie I wanted to make sure I could handle them before I joined the group ride. He's really friendly and you can contact him though the website - on brightonmtb@hotmail.com.
Alternatively I plan to try and remember some of the runs and go there by myself sometime to practice. Happy to let you know when.0 -
In that case I might come along tonight! Where and when are you all meeting?
Alex0 -
Everyone meets at the University Car Park. I think it's best if you contact Brightonmtb about coming along tonight though. Not sure it's up to me to be inviting people along to their rides just yet, if you get my point.0
-
Another Hands up from a Hove actually ( and just not quite in Portslade ) MTB rider with roadie tendencies.
What a load of Brightonians here! Ditto, as I'm a stone throw away from Dyke railway trail. Look out for a pink polker dot jersey rider.
Ridden the downs link from Christ hospital back to Hove ( actually ), flat, fast and fun, then it gets hard, hilly and slow as you turn onto the Downs at the end to get back into Hove. A good day out Rob0 -
So did anyone else go along to Big Dog?
Alex0 -
I raced at big dog. I was in a 3 man team, one with a cold, one with a headache, and me with a dodgy knee, and we came 26th out of 33 in our category
Had a great day.
Russ0 -
Well done!
I did the 'oneder Dog one lap thing and discovered quite how much more experience would have helped - at the start I could not believe how fast other riders were going down bendy singletrack and not crashing. By the end of my (61 minute) lap I was going much faster than before but too late to make up the time! Some tough uphill stretches too - really appreciated the cake at the finish.
Am tempted to cut my 27" handlebars down a bit as Stanmer is my local stomping ground and the foliage is rather constricting...
Do they do the same route each year?
Alex0
