Difference in pedals?

Hi all,

I am just wondering what the advantage is in buying specialist pedals. I have an entry level MTB (Scott Aspect 55), but it comes with plastic pedals. What would the advantage be in replacing them with some metal ones such as the ones made by Wellgo?

I understand the idea behind the pedals that you can hook bike trainers on etc. But I am wondering more about the 'standard' pedals.
Help me I am a n00b!

The supplied pedals are likely to be the very cheapest, the bearings will probably not last long, and there may be some flex in the plastic. Grip may also be poor. Bikes are usually sold with "token" (or even no) pedals as riders usually have their own preferred pedal, often taking them from a previous bike.

By all means use them to start with, when they start to click or you want something better, upgrade.

Grip is the main thing, especially in the wet (you won't have any), that and smashing them to bits on rocks...

The Wellgo V8-style are a really good choice.

  • Yeah, grip is the main thing. I had standard plastic wellgo pedals on my bike, until my foot slipped and somehow ended up throwing my leg/ankle back into the spinning outer chainring, which is like a big circular saw really. Now got some Wellgo MG1's, (and a nice 5 inch long scar 8) ) and they're great in any conditions.

    Cheers folks.
Come to think of it my foot has slipped in the past, mainly if it was raining though. Will add it to the furute list then ;)

Seeing as I have to be actively riding my bike to warrant such upgrades!

In some ways I wished I had bought a hybrid bike so it wouldn't be so bad on the road.

Same pedal as the Wellgos for double the money. So it is a good pedal, just not the one I'd buy

They are what I use and they are, I went for these over V12s because I like loose bearings and grease

Why are MTB economics; spend twice as much as you intended, but only half as much as you wish you could afford?

If you want it for riding on the road OR riding off road, just change your tyres. If, however, you want to ride on the road to get to the off road, you wouldn't want a hybrid anyway.

    +1 to Ditch Witch :D

    Hybrid. Does. Not. Like. Off-road.

Well, mine didn't anyway. She needed a service after one too many 'naughty' jaunts :D

Some hybrids work pretty well off road mind, the carrera subways are basically just early 90s mtbs with road tyres on  And that sounds like a criticism maybe but it's not, they're ace.
