Mudguard compatability-27"/700c

Right, as I never ride my Dalesman (see sig) due to the fact that I'd much rather ride my Giant, I'm going to change it a bit, stick mudguards and a carrier/panniers on it and have it as something useful that can actually carry things and allow me to stay stripe-free in the rain.
The wheels are 27" x 1 1/8, and obviously all mudguards seem to be 700c compatible these days. Are they interchangeable? Out of interest, what's actually bigger, a 27" rim or a 700c rim? I had a job getting tyres for it when I rebuilt it, I assume there's no way a 700c wheel will fit (just thinking if I ever knackered one would that be the end of the bike)
Thanks in advance!

27 x 1 1/4 are bigger .In most cases 700c wheels will fit. You will have to change both. You may also need to change the brakes if they are not deep drop.Shimano do a deep drop dual pivot in both nut and allan key fitting .Available from here...

I have used 700c guards on 27 x 1 1/4 wheels, you will need a broad fit guard.bagpuss0 -
OK thanks for that. So assuming that I stick with my 27" wheels, would these do the trick in Narrow 700c 35mm?
