mr hyde update (new pic 11-03-2012)

back into biking after a few years off and the 'renovation' of my trusty old trailstar soon became pretty much a new bike (all thats left of the old one are the forks and the saddle - oh - and the chainstay protector ! )
forks still need upgrading to something newer and plusher with about 100-120mm travel but this month money said either new frame to replace the borked trailstar or new forks and id rather have the frame and be able to ride right now
the concept is a do anything 'playbike' - light and long enough for a bit of XC plodding / sharp handling enough for singletrack and playing around / strong enough to handle the jumps and drops

Although, I'd probably save about a half-ton on the cranks. Something like a Saint perhaps? Keep us updated!!Boo-yah mofo

I really like the Mr. Hyde's - awesome frames0 -
I think you just like the hardtails
I think they've been one of the longest running do-it-all frames.
Pretty spot on they are. Almost as good as On-OneBoo-yah mofo

yeah the fatboys are on the weighty side but they dont half feel stiff and strong - didnt really think about weight when i specced it up TBH

That's a nice combination of blue colour, but you're missing some blue qr seat clamp.0

pHz, they ought to be strong - they weight as much as the sun
Take it you're happy with the build, judging by your sig?Boo-yah mofo

the build / bike features a couple of firsts for me so i wasnt quite sure how it would ride -
- first alu frame
- first set of disk brakes
took it out for a shakedown ride this afternoon and nothing fell off or broke and after a few tweaks the disks even seemed to work well (easy one finger lockups mean i probably need more finesse with these than i ever did with Vs where all i ever did was grab a big strong handful of brake ! )
the combination of a fat & small (so pretty stiff) alu frame and a pretty short back end (i have the adjustable dropouts set as short as they go) mean its a slightly harsh ride at the back but it transfers the power from those stiff 'solarweight' cranks extremely well (way better than the steel trailstar ever did and that was by no means a 'whippy' rear triangle)
with the short (80mm) fork on there i did have a slight concern the front end might be a bit steep and twitchy but i have always had my bikes set up with short fast front ends and i didnt notice anything unstable about this one either - when i swap the forks out for something newer i might even just stay with 100mm and no longer to keep it quick handling
didnt take it over anything too rough though and only a couple of little jumps / drops so thats the next step in testing the build
but so far me like !

too blue"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
Parktools :?:SheldonBrown0 -
not as blue as it would have been had the trailstar frame been usable -
TBH id prefer it all black and white too - but it was enough buying a new frame without replacing a load of finishing kit too so the black & blue scheme was born ...

Has The Trailstar In The Pic Got A Rear Brake Caliper..?
And Its Got Gears And Horizontal Dropouts..? Thats Why I Wanna Sell The Frame Because I Have Them Dropouts But Gears..? Can You Help?Handsome Dog Rockhound Custom Build.

Let me guess, you took the rear caliper off, because with your horizontal dropouts, it's almost impossible ( ) to line up the disc and caliper. And when you do, 5 good mashes on the crank, and a fistfull of rear brake, it's wayyyyy outta line. Even with chain-tugs??
Right? Not that I know from experiance, or anything... 8)Boo-yah mofo

the tinkering bug has indeed struck again - tough keeping the white saddle clean and wanted some slightly lower gears without adding a second chainring so switched from 11-28 / 38T to 11-34 / 34T

Turning out quite nice man!

Nice bike 8)
I had an original Mr Hyde back in the early 2000's (or whenever it was first made), sold it to a mate a few years back. Went to see him the otherday & it was sitting there in his shed so I had to take a picture of it
It had Psylo Race forks, Grimeca disk brakes & the Chris King headset (that's in another of my bikes still) when I first bought it, had a few changes since then though.0 -
Still tinkering.
760mm bars were proving as bit wide for my 5'6" frame so switched out for 710mm Ragley Wisers and threw on a Pro FSR 70mm stem (flipped) to see if there's any noticeable difference between that and the 50mm stuff I usually run.
slainte rob0 -
Looking very nice Rob! Good to see someone else with the Ragley cheeky saddle and running BB7's
Oh yeh, and a nice bit of "crrrrrrrrraaaaaazzzzy pavin!!"0 -
Cheeky is pretty much the comfiest 'skimpy' saddle I've tried.
And went BB7 since I was new to disks and didn't fancy all the hydraulic stuff first time out.
The slightly narrower bars and longer stem definitely make a difference for the better.

Nowt with wrong BB7s, better than some hydraulics. Cool build.0

I've just been getting the Carbon Cycles branded Nanos for the Pitch, definitely grippier than my old V8s- 140g lighter too.
Not that I'm a weight weenie!0 -
Poor old Mr Hyde has today entered (very probably temporary) retirement, and now looks like this.
