The Higham to Stoke part of your route touches the northern edge of my Saturday morning loop - try turning right as you come out of Higham/Thorrington Street to go towards Withermarsh(?) then into Stoke from Scotland Street it's much more interesting than the main road (usually see the odd hare or two).

Also try going from Higham to Boxted then Boxted to Nayland - down Burnt Dick Hill ! (not joking - there are some great views of the valley & some decent hills (by Essex standards)

Can't RV as coming out of Colchester - but if you happen to see me - , Silver Allez, Silver shoes & helmet (my that looks poncey written down) do say hello

As mentioned Burnt Dick Hill is decent by Essex/Suffolk standards, also Carters Hill and Cooks Hill are worth adding into loops.

Why not try and find a local club if you are really looking for companions on a ride. Most are desperate for new recruits and would be desperate to get you involved  Ask plenty of questions of the clubs in your area to find the club that at least has more than a superficial interest in your area of riding

Thanks guys, got a bit lost, but that was fine When I got to Colchester FC I though bugger, you’ve missed your turning  You are dead on with the comments on the area, very nice, some awesome descents followed by some equally awesome ascents. Some beautiful little villages, I may have to pop to one or two of the pubs I found en route. A day of firsts also, 1st 40 Mile ride and first time over 36mph, If I changed from Cyclocross tires to the GP 4000 would that make much of a difference to my speeds?
The cycle Gods were looking after me also, as there was very little wind, I found.
One point I would like to mention, is the realisation of speed, sat in my car doing 30 is a chore, seemingly to crawl along however on two wheels you get a stark reality check.

Glad you enjoyed (most of) your visit to the Essex side ,-another interesting little loop is Nayland to Wormingford (turn left off the Bures Road) to Little Horkesley to Nayland again.

I spend a fair bit of time driving round Essex & Suffolk for work, but it's only when you get out on the bike thhat you realise just how nice it can be round here.

I agree, normally a Recce a route in my car, old habits die hard. however todays adventure was well worth it, at one point I was riding against the flow of trafic on the A12, theres a footpath which I used, found a fence on my right jumped that and founds some road, A good 2hrs 20 mins spent I think. :)

Good looking route, I ride alot of those roads.
Try it the other way round so you can ascend Burnt Dick Hill.
