Only on motorbikes - I think all my motorbikes have been datatagged....very useful for marking individual components.
You have to pay a fee to datatag in Brackley.0 -
What is?
Ahhhhhhh google is my friend. Well, I think it's a nice idea, but it depends on the police/someone with a scanner actually finding your bike to scan it, does it not? If someone's stolen a bike with a little holographic sticker saying 'I have a datatag' they're unlikely to let that happen, are they not?
Now, if it was a little GPS tracker like cars have on CSI, I'd buy that...0 -

But what about the weight, batteries, electronics etc.? Do radio signals travel through CF?"Bed is for sleepy people.

Got it on my motorbike - decent reduction in the insurance premium as a result so it must be some good as a deterrent. Not sure it would be as much use on a push bike though due to the fuzz generally not giving two hoots about them being nicked.0

Shussssssssh stop it. On CSI it's just a teeeeeny little flashy thing. Therefore that must be the absolute truth. What do you mean cars have batteries? :P0 -

Apparently cars do have batteries, although I don't really understand how they work.
As for it being a little flashy thing on telly and therefore must be true, where can I get one of those teleporter thingies from Star Trek. It's on TV and must exist."Bed is for sleepy people.

I noticed yesterday in a London LBS that they were offering free datatags on new bikes, it looks like a little led which they glue deep inside your seat tube, sounds like a bloody good idea to me.
Some friends of mine from a previous company I worked for mentioned that the company had stopped staff from taking their bikes into the office, previously everyone used the basement and on the first day one of the guys bikes was stolen, no insurance, v expensive carbon road bike.
I will tagging all my city bikes 1st thing.Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.
Rule #9 // If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.
Rule #12 // The correct number of bikes to own is n+1.
Rule #42 // A bike race shall never be preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run.0 -
Ive shoved one of these down my seat tube..http://www.immobitag.com/uk/
they do a version for people with frames without regular seat tubes.. weighs nothing.. no LED I'm afraid!
The fuzz - British Transport Police have been giving them out for free at some train stations in the south east..

Ive also got the ugliest looking Purple Cannondale( It looked cool in the early 90's) in the hope it will put the thieves off!0 -
Careful, the government will covertly install RF readers on lamp posts and track your movements.
FACT.0 -
It is just a set of microchips - kinda like the ones you have shoved in your dog - can be scanned and give a name and address off a DB!
You glue a microchip in the frame, each wheel and any other components you value.
Can be scanned by the Rozza's and they will contact you.
The sticker is just a deterrent.....and funky.0 -

does it work in aluminium components, as the scanning would have to go through what is essentially a Farady Cage?
Or do I have an excuse to buy some nice carbon clinchers as a *ahem* security purchase?"Bed is for sleepy people.

You'd be surprised - thieves aren't necessarily the brightest people in the world. I had my first road bike nicked about 3 years ago, and it had a Datatag inside it. When the Police found about 30 bikes in a guy's shed, they noticed one had a Datatag sticker on it, and it was mine! Would surely have taken the thief 2 seconds to pull the sticker off, and then the Police would never have known it was mine...0 -
My commuter/MTB has a tag - the Manchester Police give them away free every now and again.
Will have to pop down with the fixed (once I get it) and they do the freebies again.0 -
The EU has recently decreed that all sheep must have rfid tags.
To be installed free at a pedestrian crossing near you.0
