I had an off on ice in January and everything came unclipped exactly as it is meant to. Don't actually remember how but it worked.

We expect ski bindings to release when you fall over, the mechanisms on pedals are basically the same they shoudn't work any differently.

Out of interest, has anybody came off their bike wearing clipless??? Did your feet release????

My wife told me that her mate at work said her husband had clipless and he ended up in a car accident on top of the bonnet still attached to his bike....
As I wrote in my previous post, this was the big problem with toeclips and straps, which was largely solved with ski binding style clipless pedals. Nearly everybody detaches from clipless pedals in an accident, as there is invariably some sideways component to an impact or slip. Some people must, by sheer odds, have gone straight over and remained clipped in (as your wife describes), I suppose, but that used to be the norm as happened to me and most of my riding buddies, sometime or other.

Had an off in december on black ice. I was out of the pedals before I had hit the deck. Nuff said.
