    Hi,

As a starting point, you need to decide whether you want a road bike or a hybrid - Only you can decide this as only you know what sort of riding you'll be doing. The Carrera looks like a decent hybrid for the money, whereas the Saracen seems expensive for what it is.

    Hope this helps a bit.

Cheers I'm a bit new to this. I want mainly a road bike as I figured I wouldn't be doing any off-road riding. I don't mind a hybrid just want the best for the money really.

I was recomennded these just now in my local shop but couldn't find much info on them:

Any thoughts, I'm 5"7 so not sure I would get away with the 20.5inch on the Kentfield.

    Thanks for looking

I test rode a Gryphon Disc a couple of months back. For the weight of the bike, I found the supplied gearing a bit high for a moderately steep hill (I cycled up it, but I was knackered at the top). At this point I will point out I'm no mountain goat, just shy of 90Kg ;)

Ended up spending less than the Gryphon on my Pylon8... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SARACEN-PYLON-8-S ... 7C294%3A30 this is the 20" frame, but the same shop does an 18" which might be more suitable for your height

Alfine hub geared bikes normally cost in excess of £600, so to get one for half that was a result! Yes, the frame is a bit heavy, but the default gearing covers a "gear inches" range of ~27-83, easily capable of my daily challenge on the way home from work.

I first came across £300 Pylon8 bikes via "discountcyclesdirect" but then read some negative stuff about them, so please do some research before you commit, so you know what could happen.

Ive got the Saracen Tour 3 and I think its a really good bike, Sora shifters and derailers arn't the best by a long shot but they do the job and being a beginner its all I want at the moment.......give it a year or so and I will be looking for a carbon framed bike with aero wheels and at least a 105 groupset, but dura-ace would be nice 8)

Many thanks for all the help. The Saracen is a nice looking bike. Will have a look at that, yer I saw the pylon get a couple of pannings in reviews so thought twice about it.

I recently saw a thread on the Virtuoso but wasn't sure the difference between this and the gryphon (apart from the disc). Also any thoughts on the Kentfield?
