Gritty chain? Try a thorough clean of that just to eliminate it as a possibiltiy - don't forget to clean the cassette and chainrings too. If not, then it'll likely be (as it was on my Tuscany recently) the Bottom bracket. Check the bearing cups (are they called cups still?) are in tight - Shimano say they should be tightened to 3.5-5Nm; with my 19cm long spanner that worked at approximately 20-25kg of oomph. I prefer to work in these technical terms.

I replaced the BB entirely - Dura-Ace only cost £35 - and the clicking has gone. Took about 15 minutes total.
Litespeed Tuscany, Hope/Open Pro, Ultegra, pulling an Extrawheel trailer, often as not.

    FCR 4 (I think?)

Yep, my siena did the same thing, BB cups tightened up(ultegra), no more clicking etc. Good luck

One thing to try - take the wheels off, clean around the front and rear dropouts and put a bit of grease on all the contact points where wheel axles and skewers touch the dropouts. Often creaking from dropout/wheel interface sounds like it is coming from the BB area.
Could also be any of about 10 different things though...good luck!

  • Glad you are sorted - always a relief! Silicon spray lube works wonders on saddle rails, cleats, etc. It dries to nothing and solves all sorts squeaks. Get it from B+Q, next to the WD40.
Trying my best to do 300 miles a month on and off road.
