Which hardtail to start off with?

Hi all,
I'm wanting to start off riding some local trails etc, and am looking to buy a hardtail for upto £350.
I've been looking and reading around, and the bikes that seem to be the best for this budget are the GT Avalanche 3.0 Disc and Mongoose Tyax Elite/Super (both 2009). I've seen some 2008 bikes around too although not always available in the size I think I'll want (18"), but I do need to get into a shop and try out some different size frames first I think.
However I'm a bit of a newbie, so if anyone could offer a bit of advice that would be great. Is there anything else I should consider?
Thanks

If it's any use, I recentl bought the Avalanche 3.0 disc and I think it's great. Most of my riding so far has been off-road in the Peak District, and I've taken it to Llandegla, and it seems to handle it all pretty well.
I don't think it's the lightest of bikes in the world, but overall I'm really pleased with it.0 -
Cheers all, had a read of the which 09 hardtail thread and I still think (for the money) the GT and Mongoose seem decent for the money.
What about the Trek 4300, how would that compare?
Also, daverey, Llandegla is my local trail so it would get plenty of use there0
