Depends on what you are gonna do? Commute only? Bit of road leisure riding? Bit or Leisure MTB'ing? Commuting and Racing? Fitness commute (fixed gear).
Asuming road commute and road leisure - Trek 1.7 is a fine bike.
I've got a 1.5, which is the same frame as the 1.7 and it's a damn fine bike. I've done 100 mile sportives on it, in a decent time and it's been fine. The only thing I'll say against it is the ride can be a bit harsh, but then that's comparing it with my CF weekend bike which isn't really fair. The other thing to watch out for is the headset which is a censored to get replaced.
pain is temporary, the glory of beating your mates to the top of the hill lasts forever.....................
Now the Wilier La Triestina Mirage 2009 has thrown a spanner in the works...
That's one of the bikes I'm currently considering along with the giant Defy 1 and Bianchi Via Nirone 7, and the Wilier is favourite so far based on spec and looks. I'm waiting for the LBS to arrange a test ride, no joy with the WIlier yet but I should get a chance to ride the Defy later this week.
My left-field option may be a Condor Frattello; it sounds worthy (can take mudguards & rack if required) but I'm concerned it may be dull....

C+ gave it a 10/10 I think....?!?
I don't think you'll go wrong with the trek though - make sure you get to ride before you buy - happy with geometry and setup/function.
