Just come off a Cannondale F500 hardtail and now have £1k to spend on a replacement.

Will be used by a 15 stoner on trails in Cannock, Afan, Cwm Carn etc.

Currently swaying towards a Specialized FSR XC Comp '09...but you guys are the experts, what do you say?

The FSR's are getting good reviews (although the rear shock got a bit of a pasting in MBR this month). If you could stretch your budget towards the FSR XC Pro you'd be getting a pretty competant bike.
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result

FSRxc Comp is an excellent bike and I personally think the rear shock is excellent. Trek Fuel Ex 5.5 is also worth a look. The I-Drive XCR 5 has marmite looks but seems to work very well according to reviews.

Have a look at the full-suss sticky at the top of the buying advice forum,
You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.
