My Knog bag is so comfortable it actually makes the idea of wearing a rucksack while cycling a stupid one.

There are no gains wearing a rucksack over my Knog bag. (They also make superb bike lights).

I'm secure enough to be unphased by anything any of you say!

And just to clarify, I manage to carry the following:

    D-lock
    2 cable locks
    Underwear
    socks
    Trousers
    Shirt
    My good watch
    Mini pump
    Wallet
    Bike lights
    Batteries
    tyre levers
    multi tool
    spare inner tube
    Luch for work.

It's stylish, comfortable, the big reflective strap around the main body of the bag is practical and its ergonomically right. So nerr! :P
    Food Chain number = 4

I use a rucksac, always have. I do not have any experience with Courier bags, but they just don't look as stable.

I don't mind about the sweat problem, as I shower and change at work.

Blue bar tape! More longevity than the white... blue hudz... And blue tyres = good plan!

Anyone know which hudz fit onto dia compe drop levers?

Also on the OP, courier bags, I carry a laptop, mouse, cd-drive, lunch, clothes, a d-lock, pump, CO2, three innertubes, levers, 3 multi-tools, two pairs of sunglasses and a couple of pairs of gloves in mine fine (it's the crumpler laptop one with the cool sleeve in it)

When I need to carry a lot of stuff on my bike then I use my camelbak that i got for mtbing, smaller capacity, but has straps so i can stick waterproofs and megaphone on the outside.

Aside, megaphones are great for scolding drivers...

I'd never fit racks to my bike, it would be criminal, plus expensive as I use three different bikes for commuting, one of which you could never fit a rack to at all.

 @ the fact that this was the reason you chose to +1...

Also, I like the Pearson's new look.

That had nothing to with it!

Next step for the Pearson is new blue tires. P*nctured at the weekend for the first time in ages, I think the tires are finally on their way out. Also, now summer is on the way i think new bar tape is called for...

Blue bar tape! More longevity than the white... blue hudz... And blue tyres = good plan!

But then I'd need this saddle:

Argh! Supposed to be having a cheap month, saving for holiday money - off to Turkey in 3 weeks, plus GF's bday in early June, yet finger is hovering over new saddle, tape and tires, and i'm wondering if hudz would fit cane creek levers!

    Damn you Olivia!

I love my panniers, no sweaty back, but I can understand why others don't share my enthusiasm for them.

On that basis, I voted rucksack. However, I have never tried a courier bag, so am probably not best placed to comment on the relative merits of the two options.

A courier bag is much more achingly hip, dahling dahling dahling.

I'm with Lit on this - tried rucksack - panniers are much more civilised, no sweaty back and better balance on the bike :)

I voted Man-bag, though I do use both...

I also have a carradice rack pack, for transporting my pipe and slippers.

DDD that knog thing is pretty ugly, sorry! A courier bag has be the right shape!

Depends how much I'm carrying and how heavy it is. Lots/heavy stuff, I wear my padded Camelback. Few/small light items, I wear my 30+-year-old musette. =)

Ditch and go courier. And get a bulky chain lock and wear it round your waist...

I'm considering getting a length of this cut off for me, that's me inspecting my new chain - do you like my hat?

Nervous? Why? In a backs against the wall way?

I love it, it does look poo I admit, but its just the right size for lunch, shirt, boxers, 2 tubes, minipump, wallet, multitool and work passes. I can even squeeze a base layer in there if it warms up during the day.

  • I'm a recent convert to the man bag/messenger bag fad. I now have three!
    >> a Rapha Musette which I use most days - it's more of a man bag than a messenger bag but has enough space for wallet, Blackberry, phone, keys, waterproof jacket, and still plenty of space left - I can even fit my (small) company laptop in it if I have to.
    >> a large Crumpler messenger/laptop bag which I use when I bring in clean shirts and so on. It's enormous and I wouldn't want to carry any more on my back than that can hold. If I was carrying more, I'd be looking into pannier options and a touring bike.
    >> a (slightly) smaller Crumpler bag which I mostly use as a "daddy" bag and my wife has pretty much decided is actually hers.

If you just carry a few bits and pieces around, there shouldn't be too much weight on your back to cause a problem. Get a bag with a "third leg" stability strap which, in my experience, stops it moving around on your back.

I'm not sure I'd want a messenger bag for a really long ride but it's perfect for commuting and mooching around town. Plus, when you get off your bike, a messenger bag is so much cooler than the American/European teenager on a trip to London look which you get by using a rucksack.

It might be a fad. Who cares? Buy it, look cool and if (after a few years) you change your mind and want a rucksack, buy one of those too! (Aren't you a ludicrously overpaid City lawyer? You can afford £50 to £100 on a new bag.)

My vote would actually be for a medium sized Timbuk2 messenger bag at £60. CycleSurgery at Spitalfields market had a decent selection when I was in there the other day. If I could justify (to SWMBO) another bag, that's what I'd get.
Never be tempted to race against a Barclays Cycle Hire bike. If you do, there are only two outcomes. Of these, by far the better is that you now have the scalp of a Boris Bike.

Ortlieb Velocity rucksack. Still slightly sweaty back but raised foam sections cool you quite effectively. All the same Ortlieb waterproofing and build quality. Also isn't a man bag.

Rucksack for me. I carry my uniform shirt and a few bits in it, so even if I get a sweaty back I can get changed and freshen up before work

tried panniers on my old bike, didn't work for me
