Hi all

Am looking to get back into mountain biking after a few years away from cycling. I Am in the market for a hardtail initially, to see if I 'get the bug' so to speak. I have a budget of upto about 800 quid...

I have been looking at Giant XTC and Cannondale F4 (also cube LTD) I liked to feel of the Cannondale frame more than the others. It was the 2009 F4 with the headshock.

My question is, I have found a new 2008 F4 for considerably less than this years and I notice that the 2008 RRP is about 250 quid less than this years. Is this due to any reason other than inflation / exchange rates or is the frame likely to be substantially different to last years which I liked in the shop?

Also, if the headshock wears out, can I replace it with upgraded 'standard' shocks at a later date if you get what I mean?

Finally, am I heading down the wrong track with Cannondale when the Giant XTC seems to be better priced for the specification?

I own a 2007 F4, it is a great bike, very nimble and light. And yes the headshock can be replaced with a standard size fork by using a converter.

The frames - apart from the tribal decals and/or splatter paint jobs - will be indentical, and the 08 bike will have a marginally better spec - branded front hub, finishing kit, tyres etc.

About 5 yrs ago, a young lady I know did the Trans Alps on her F4. She did great, finishing well. She said the bike was ideal: Light, quick, agile and robust.

Others on much heavier Enduro bike struggled on the huge climbs.

A bike that can do the Trans Alps seems to be ok with me!
