Hi all,

First ride and first puncture!

I had schwalbe marathon plus tyres on my hybrid but not sure what to get on my road bike (700 x 23 preferably?) Wouldn't mind trying some cheaper tyres if anyone's got any recommendations? Oh and a cheap pressure gauge too?

Thanks again everyone,

Daz

Define cheap? Vittoria Rubino Pros are good, cheapish and p* resistant. Between £16 to £20 a tire. Also, don't get a pressure gauge, get a trackpump. Vital kit and most/all come with a pressure gauge.

    +1.

    Also, Conti Gator Skins (non-folding).
    FCN 2-4.

-1 for the Gators for me. My experience has compelled me to respond to this thread. Bought a 25c for the front wheel on the basis of various forums' recommendations. I never ride off tarmac and it was mounted on a new Mavic Open Pro ceramic rim though I don't tend to use maximum air pressure. Had an explosive puncture caused by a split in the sidewall last week, then there was another split yesterday so they had to be binned as dangerous - and they weren't cheap either! No probs at all with Marathons. It's perhaps a case of too little material on the former and plenty on the latter, or simply a risk of more flats versus higher speeds for the lighter tyre. I've now got a very expensive Panaracer on, which I'm told(!) is bombproof.

I got a puncture yesterday on my rear tyre. I'm still on the Continental UIltrasport 700 X 25 tyres that came with the bike, so I'm looking for something with better punc resistance too.

I'm considering Schwalbe Stelvios since I used Schwalbe Marathons on my hybrid and they were very impressive.

Given up with flashy fast tyres on the commuter, gone for Marathon plus, Spa Cycles were selling them for £19.

 Did you return them? Sounds like you've got a bad lot.

No I didn't. You are right - I could have and should have taken it back I suppose as I'd done < 1000 miles and they hadn't really worn but I don't like to complain! I am becoming somewhat extravagant with the bike since I junked the car - £36 for the Panaracer Ribmo Protek replacement which has never let me down... in the 2 days I've had it. Besides, I was in Taunton when I needed a new'un - bought the Gator in Bristol. Probably was unlucky as they should be quality but I won't be going back to them in a hurry.

+1. I have done over 2,500 miles on a pair of 28mm since last Summer.

Had one deflation on Pancake day which made me late for tea!! :( A close examination of tyre and tube couldn't locate the cause of the minute pinprick hole in my inner tube. Whatever it was hadn't pierced the tyre.
Aspire not to have more, but to be more.

-1 Gators and some other Conti's (Sport Contact), they are soft, wear fast and are cut and puncture prone.
