question on spd's and correct cleat allignment...

I have just bought a pair of shimano spd shoes and connected the appropriate spd cleat (sm-SH51) to the shoe. However I have trouble connecting the cleats/shoes to the pedals
shimano a520. I have altered the pedals to the lowest/loosest setting but still the shoes are hard to get off and on.....My existing spd shoes (bought from lidl..but rather old now) work fine...so I can't understand why the new ones do not...do I need to grease the
pedals and if so what do i use....sorry if this is confusing I look forward to your help as
