I don't like it either, but a good head wind gives you a bit of extra training value that you would not otherwise get. The added resistance can also be negated to a small extent by getting down on the drops, something I never do unless I'm trying to punch thorugh a stiff headwind. And as for coming back with the tail wind - Bliss!!

Yes as that is just part of riding and you may as well get used to it. Just keep your effort the same and the speed will be what it is. As for finding that illusive tail wind well most people tend start and finish in the same place ie at home so what you gain in one place you pay for elsewhere so if you are going to plan your ride strategically then plan to come home into the tail wind. Nothing worse that being tired and battling a headwind.

If it's windy, it's windy so I always find no matter which way I go round I'm still into a head wind! So if I go out, I put more effort in, but cut my ride short by 20-30% so am not so nackered at the end. Guess am just weak - but at least I feel good for going out in the first place!

I didn't realise how windy it was till I'd already headed off today - decided to go on an untested route - didn't even check the gradient on my Anquet maps, must be getting more confident - result very tired legs, a slower than average mph and a lowest speed of 4.5mph (yes 4 not 14 - uphill and into a headwind :P ).

And being a big gal, was not expecting to get nearly get blown off due to a cross-wind - think I should stop loosing weight  .

I am with you I hate it, but if you didn't go out in it you would only go out about 2 days a week. If I normally go for a 40 mile, then I would reduce it to say 25 miles if its over say 30mph wind.

You live in the north east of England FFS, it's always bloody windy up here

    You're better off asking:

"Mmm, no wind today, not much point in going out for a ride"

My commute is 13 miles and always has wind behind on the way, and thus a head wind on the way back.

I just try to keep my cadence the same on the way back and forget about speed, and am really starting to quite enjoy a headwind tbh. Knowing I have given up on speed on the way home (and hence my travelling time) is quite relaxing, and it certainly keeps the sweat at bay from my leaky head :D

Just been out for 20 miles in windy conditions on the flat up the Severn Estuary from home via Avonmouth (Bristol) to Aust. Absolute hell coming back against the wind. I hate it. I was going over to Chepstow but the thought of a side on gale on the old Severn Bridge (and the extra 4 miles) put me off!

Agreed it comes with the territory but that doesn’t stop me hating it. I'd rather get wet than struggle like the weakling I am, on the drops, chin getting friendly with them stem into a strong headwind. It's basically a reality check for me in that, though I think I'm getting better, I am in fact pretty crap at riding a bike.

I did 33 miles with a fairly strong northerly yesterday and to add insult to injury, coming through Cleadon village, I see a bloke out on what appeared to be a Planet X Stealth Pro Carbon with a 4 spoke in the front and a full disc in the rear.

Agree... I was having this discussion with someone the other day while riding into a headwind... the conclusion was that we'd both rather cycle on a calm, rainy day than an otherwise lovely but windy day :?

With regards to OP's question, I still try and go out, but make a point of cycling into the wind to start with and coming back with the wind behind me. Done a 30 miler the other day in this manner and it was bliss on the way home... felt like I could have managed another 20 on top 8)

one of the biggest changes ive notice with the weather over the last 15 years is the fact its always windy , I seem to remember ( unless it was rose tinted oakleys i was wearing ) that summer used to have dead still days ( drag being the exception of course ..)

there are even new , sneaky winds to contend with ....

those that only blow 5 miles away from your house ....so you think its not windy when you look out of your window..

those winds that only blow up to 8 feet of the floor.....so the trees dont move to give it away

    and the worse one .....

the " in your face every direction " wind ....you Know the one ..." cant wait to get this as a tail wind on the way home .......35 miles later ...turn point ....oh for F%^%+s sake ! etc etc "

i now expect it and ride it .....

never said enjoy it though !

Oh HELL yeah, I've come up against this one a few times, I thought it was just me?!? Surely this must have a name. We can't be the only two people ever to have been faced with this tricky (read: bloody annoying!) weather phenomenon... surely?

HATE wind. I'm light so I really suffer in the wind (payback for being able to fly up the hills I suppose).

The worst thing about it is that when I'm going into a headwind for miles and miles I'm thinking "I'm really not enjoying this". Nearly all other times when cycling there is some level of enjoyment, even if you are suffering at the same time. With a stiff headwind though, it sometimes seems that the whole business of cycling is pointless, it saps the spirit as well as the body...

I'm SURE that sometimes the wind DOES change direction half way through my trip. Apart from anything else, the prevailing wind where I am is from the SW and I often go out in the evenings just before dark. Often the wind drops just before/as the sun is going down, so if I head west I get the wind against me on the way out and then it drops perfectly on queue just as I'm turning around and expecting a tail wind....

Just get out there and ride. Look at the wind as an opportunity to work hard AND practice getting an aero position.

Personally, I'd much rather be out in the wind on a good day than be out in the rain.

I think we all find this  battling along thinking next turning then wind will be behind me.....just to find it appears to be still right in your face
