I'm looking for some new handlebars and was thinking of trying the shallow drop Ergonova's, but i like the look of the Ergosum more.
Anyone ride them? What do u think?

The Ergosums are very nice I find, but I haven't ridden loads of other bars to make a big comparison.0

I am running Ergonovas and am more than happy with them. Supply is a bloody nightmare though! If you find someone with them in stock, buy them quickly. Next delivery is mid to late June!0

I have the ergonova team. They're great on the hoods (horizontal transition to chorus levers) and very comfy on the flat horizontal bars, which is the main reason I bought them. Also the carbon does seem comfier than the deda newtons i had previously. However the ergo shape of the drops means that its a long long reach to the levers when in the drops; the position is fine if you dont actually need to use the brakes, but when you do its just a bit of a stretch.
They're fine for me - as I do mostly distance and sportive type stuff - but if i was racing, or spent more time in the drops needing to be get to the brakes quickly, I'd swap them for something with less of an ergo bend.

Thanx guys. I was looking at shallower drops coz my current ones are too uncomfortable to ride in. I assumed the Nova's would be easier to ride on the drops but if the brakes are a distance maybe the Sum's will be better. They are still quite shallow.0

I have the Ergonova Pros. I like them a lot, they're a really nice shape, comfortable to hold in the drops, and the oval top works well.
When I bought them, I spent a lot of time in the shop comparing the 'sum and the 'nova. To be honest, there's not a lot of difference between them, in terms of the shape of the drop. Ok, you get more reach and drop with the 'sum and you lose the oval bit, but if you've got short fingers, the 'sum won't help you over and above the 'nova.
Incidentally, why/where are your current bars uncomfortable, and what are your current bars? It might not be the drop that is causing the issue...
Another bar to consider (which I also have and also really get on with) is the Syntace 7075 or 2014. The shape is hard to describe, it's like a mix of a classic bend, and compact. While the nominal drop and reach are on the high side, the hoods are placed quite a way down the curve such that the transition between the hoods and the drops is (or can be made) quite small - the shape of the curve is such that the brake levers are closer to your hands on the drops than the Ergonova. They are similarly comfy to hold in the drops. If you can fiddle with your stem length/height to get the hoods in the right place, these are well worth a try. Some guys is selling a whole load cheap on ebay at the minute (where I got mine from!). I think I like them even more than my ergonovas but the jury is still out!0 -
Moomaloid, I ride the Ergosum bars on one of my bikes. Really like them - the drop is pretty shallow, which suits me, there is plenty of bar length on the drop part for you to be able to place your hands comfortably in different positions. The top of the bar (in the centre) is a round profile, which I prefer too. Reach to the levers is much, much easier when on the drops than my previous bars (ITM Millenium) or the bars on my other bike (Scott own-branded anatomic drops).
The drop between the Ergonova and Ergosum is only 5mm different (Ergonova is shallower drop) and the Ergonova looks a little more 'anatomic' to me - I prefer the slightly more 'rounded' drop of the Ergosum, which is also very comfortable.
But I think the main thing to consider is the reach though - Ergosum 89mm vs Ergonova 77mm. You need to bear this in mind when considering your riding position and stem length. Obviously also depends on where you set the hoods on the bar prior to taping.
BTW I also considered bars by FSA (Omega, Wing Pro) and Deda (Zero100). Ergosum won for comfort...0 -
Hey guys, thanx again for the detailed feedback. I bought a Focus last year. It was the firts time back on a bike in 7 years, having ridden a lot as a teenager. The bars are the standard piece of rubbish. Really skinny, which i hate. But i also find it very uncomfortable in the drops.
I love the look of the Sums, but the Nova's look less of a drop. But also i'm not sure i'll like the oval tops of the Nova's so the Sums are nosing ahead. Being in the centre of London, theres not many places to check the two out. The chains, which i can;t stand, don't seem to stock them. So i'm gonna have to buy blind i think...0 -
A few months old, but I'm trying to decide on which new bars to try on a bike of mine.
I need to switch the bars because the current ones are too narrow (picked this bike up from someone else, with narrower shoulders)
I have a LOOK with Deda Newton shallow drop bars (44cm) that I love. Paired with the new Ergo Campag levers I can finally reach the levers from the drops, which I thought was just a dream before this setup.
- I'm considering the Deda's on this bike, but considering it is a traditional geo steel Casati, even with the same bars it'll probably feel a bit different.
- I am thinking about the Ergonovas and the Ergosums.
Stats:
Deda Shallow - reach = 80mm; drop = 135mm
Ergonova - reach = 77mm; drop = 123mm
Ergosum - reach = 89mm; drop = 128mm
I think less reach/drop would be the best on this bike, not more. I also kind of like the idea of the "egg" shape, as I put some of that plastic spine stuff over the housing and under the tape on the LOOK to mimic the "egg" shape. I like the feel. Though I must say I don't dislike the feel of simple round flat sections.
So...what might you do in my situation or suggest? Get some more Dedas? Novas? Sums? Yeah, can't test these three out, so like Moomaloid, I've got to guess and keep my fingers crossed.
Thanks!0 -
I think a lot of riders are going this route... short reach and shallow drop. I'm also looking at the Novas and Sum, the reach on the Sum is quite a bit more than the Novas if your figures are correct.
Deda also seem to have an interesting bar, the Presta. I'm adding them to your stats... does anyone know the drop and price range on these?
Deda Shallow - reach = 80mm; drop = 135mm
Ergonova - reach = 77mm; drop = 123mm
Ergosum - reach = 89mm; drop = 128mm
Deda Presta - reach = 77mm; drop = ???; price = ???
any more worth looking at?0 -

Still haven't decided on the bars. Hmm, I'm not sure I've heard/seen the Deda Prestas.
I definitely am a fan of the short/shallow. Just can't decide if I want to try the "egg" shape or not, though I do have some plastic ribbing under my tape on over the housing on my Newtons that mimics the egg shape and I like it.
As for the Rotundo...they seem so close to the Newtons that I'd just get another set of them, since I've used them and like them.
Oh winter, not enough riding, too much time to overthink things :roll:0 -
I have just ordered the ergo nova pro bars in 44cm width from sigma sport. Luckily they had them in stock and will be delivered to me tomorrow. My Easton ea70 bars will be taken off this weekend :-)2010 Lynskey R230

Changed my ritchey classic with the ergosum team and am very happy - very good blend to the hoods and comfortable reach to the drops and can stay there much longer. On paper the ritchey were a shorter reach but in real terms the ergosun is shorter, its where they take the measurement c to c or to outside of the drop etc0
