I've been wanting to get into XC biking, except I'm completely lost on what kind of model/brand of bike to look for. Because this will be my first XC bike, I don't want it to be expensive: $500 and under. On-road; I'm not going to be going down any trails for a while. Hardtail; I doubt I'll need full-suspension if I'm remaining on the road for the most part. I'm not exactly sure which type of brakes I'm looking for yet. But pretty much I was just wondering if anyone could offer some ideas of websites and brands that I could look into for a good bike. Thanks

Buy secondhand.
Consider Specialsed and Scott.
Find a good frame you can always upgrade components0 -
The end of Summer is always a great time to buy a bike as shops are trying to clear the decks for the new bikes which are coming in for the the following year. I got a Scott Spark 10 for £1600 (rather than £2700) last year by doing this.Lap by lap analysis, videos, photos, race reports and a map of race locations www.xcenduro.co.uk0

I'm confused. If you want to get into XC why are you planning to ride on the road and not go down any trails?0

Spend some more cash £500 isn't even a vaguely expensive mtb! Get something with at least a Rockshox Tora fork, or you will have to upgrade the fork later which will cost you £££££££ Something like a Boardman MTB Comp or an Orange G3 for around £700 is a great starter mtb.0

Hi
I would go with what you like the look of and feels comfy.
If biking works for you then you will spend a stack of cash on your next one.
We all get soooo carried away with first bikes and buying advice - just get one, get some padded shorts and get out.
I'm off out now - having worked myself into a frenzy
