Could anyone shed some light on what a compact frame essentially is and what the benefits are?

PS, I realise it is compact but why?

Compact frames have a sloping top tube. One benefit is not having to worry about the vertical height of the frame as they use a long setpost with plenty of scope for adjustment. They are fractionally lighter and supposidly stiffer than standard frames, but I doubt if most people could tell the difference.
