Das Boot is on tonight at 11.40 on BBC2. If you have not seen it then I encourage you too. Its a great film, I remember in the mid 80s seeing it on BBC2 when they serialized it.

I think it's a great film, and not just in the catagory of war, it's a great film.
What I found was I was "rooting" for the crew when it looked like they were doomed. It just brings home (to me anyway) we're all human beings and even though they were the enemy they're fellow humans and the thought of men dying in such circumstances is horrible.
Anyone who hasn't seen it, it's must see viewing.Tail end Charlie

+2 for the HU but how do I get it from my Humax onto my PC and onto DVD? The last bit I can manage, just the first I'm stuck with.I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0

I agree, one of the best films I've seen.
I've got the director's cut on DVD, about 3 1/2 hours worth of it!
German with subtitles means that it works a treat on the turbo though.0 -
Remember seeing it as a late show in the cinema in the `80s with a group of people and we left the cinema at 2 a.m. all feeling like every drop of energy had been drained out.......emotional rollercoaster.
The musical theme with the sub charging through the storm is good tailwind cycling music to keep in your head though.0 -

When first shown on television I thought it was 6 hours long (6 x 1 hour slots)? :?:
Never seen the cinema or DVD versions, but indeed a fantatsic film.
There are three principal versions: The 1985 six hour mini-series (BBC usually showed that in hour-long blocks), the 1981 theatrical version was 2 1/2 hours, the Director's Cut is a sort of compromise version between the two. Both the mini-series and DC are available on DVD- I have the former, and I'll record this tonight as well.Dahon Speed Pro TT; Trek Portland

I liked the 1990's dance version of the theme tune0

Fab film, but my wife has just watched the first five seconds of murky green sea and said 'theres not much going on in this film is there....'
 :x :roll:0 -
Oooh, I wish I'd seen this!
I loved watching this when it was on in the 80s. Surely you can buy it on Amazon? We bought the ITV series 'The World at War' on DVD at the end of last year. Every time I hear the theme music, it makes me think of Sunday evenings, coal fires and our long gone cat. It was a bit of a family institution, that series....Ned Flanders: “You were bicycling two abreast?”
Homer Simpson: “I wish. We were bicycling to a lake.”

I've got a topfield and the info for doing this is on the www.toppy.org.uk website. It's very easy. I don't know if the same procedures will work on the humax.
Funnily enough I've got Das Boot on my toppy- I could burn you a copy if you really get stuck.0 -
Great stuff....very powerful....I wouldn't of liked being in a wolf pack!0

I have the DC on dvd and agree it is a great film.
The final scene really makes me feel sad for the men.0 -
The author said that every incident in the book actually happened, just not to the same crew.
Good film, but grim.0 -

I don't know if it was on the film last night but I recall it gave the statistic 3 out of 4 submariners on both sides during the war died. Awful.Tail end Charlie

Yes, it said at the start of 40 000 submariners 30 000 didn't return alive, but I thought that was referring to German submariners. Wouldn't surprise me if it applied to both sides though.0

Shame about the plight of the german submariners but we won the war in the end and thats what really matters.
They were the baddies and they lost.0
