First Experiences of Thetford Red Trail.....with new bike!
Well, as a committed roadie, I have always had a love of mountainbiking, the embers of which still glow from the late 80's when I owned a Specialized Stumpjumper Comp (no suspension etc!).
So, my interest has recently been re-ignited by various conversations I have had, and I have now taken the plunge and bought an entry level 2009 bike - a Felt Q520. It's not a massively specced bike, but the frame seems good and the feedback I've heard has been positive. And if I really get back into it, then maybe a 'real' bike will be in the offing!
I have recently christened the new bike with a visit to Thetford forest, and whilst there was no mud due to a dry East Anglian April, fun was to be had in spades.
If you're interested then read and look at the pics here! Hope you enjoy, and let me know how the Black compares as I haven't done that yet.

Glad you enjoyed Thetford - it's my regular ride. The red trail is in my opinion more fun and just as technical as the black without the bomb holes to play around in! since the latest repair work the red rides really well and hopefully should stand the rain a bit a better. Did you try all the obstacles in the little skills area?0

Great pictures! I was up at Thetford over the weekend with a mate and went round both red and black. I was very impressed by the improvements that TIMBER (http://www.timbermtb.org/) have put into the trail over the winter but was a bit alarmed by the amount of loose gravel/scree on the new berms. Hopefully that's just temporary rather than a sign that the trail is falling apart already !
Black during winter is horrible - just a serious of deep mud-pits - but in the dry it's actually quite fun. Both my mate and myself agreed that on the day we preferred the back route but as red gets worn in and the new single-track gets smoother, red could end up better.0
