Replacing Shifters tech issue

Hello all

I am replacing my Shimano Acera combined brake/shifter unit with hydraulic brakes and stand alone shifters.

However i have a silly tech issue I cant get my head round, and have scoured the web but nothing that specifically answers my question.

I have followed the park instructions for replacing shifter cables and all is well apart from i cant disengage the cable from the shifter.

The plastic housing that the lead cable end slots into, I can remove the lead end from but I cant disengage it from the shifter.

I can only think you have to pull the cable all the way through the shifter which means removing it from the shroud? Surely there is an easier way.

On my GT the shifter cable is popped out the housing then removed via the slot, like you do on a brake lever.

However on my Specialized I cant see a way of passing it through the slot as the slot doesnt go all the way through if you know what i mean.

Cheers in advance

Paul

The gear cables usually need to pull all the way out through the back (i.e. inboard) part of the shifter. There is probably a little plastic screw head that is a bung covering the hole for the nipple. You need to put the shifter into the lowest gear on the left and highest on the right to unwind the cable in the shifter, and detach the cables from the mechs, they should then push through. Usually you will need new cable inners as the ends will fray and make reinserting to the inners unsatisfactory.

    Hi

On the left shifter its on 1 and on the right shifter its on 8, and i have loosened the cable at the deralliuer and i can move it freely in the shifter housing, i just cant disengage it from the shifter housing to replace the shifter.

So sorry in newbie terms i have to remove the lead end at the deralllieur end to stop fray, and pull the whole cable through the black outer housings.

Perhaps when my new shifters arrive they will have a system like (see below) and i can just crack my current shifter plastic cable end holder to get the cable end out, and put the cable in the new housing?

    Or am i missing something?

Your picture is showing the brake cable entry (the gear cable entry is behind it). Gear cables don't get the split nut.

From the Shimano website, the first picture shows the small cover cap that you have to remove (5) to push the cable through the shifter from the gear entry (4, which is not split).

The second is from their tech docs explaining how the cable is fitted, again showing the cover screw.

Oh, and if it is not obvious, removing the inner cable requires that you first completely pull off the outer.
