They are on 'special' at the mo, might be useful for training/winter wheels.
Anyone know the weight of these? Recommended? Ta.

Damn! At that price I just had to buy a set for my g/f - hope she appreciates it

I have a set on my Planet-X SL Carbon - the wheels are very light and have stayed completely true for the 1500 miles I have used them - highly recommended! You would need to spend £250 or more to get any other wheels this light.

My campag ones should be coming today - sound ideal for the winter bike. After buying the Quest Comos for 60 quid and finding them waaaaaay too heavy and subsequently selling them, these should be good.

Checked the website and, bugger, Campag ones out of stock. :(:(:(

So sent them an email. "When you getting some more? Or any 'cosmetic seconds'?" Gave my mobile number in a hope they might contact me.

Unbelievably, got a phone call fifteen minutes later "had a scour of the warehouse, and we've found another pair, last ones. Get on your computer, and the wheels page, and I'll upload them into stock. Be quick and buy them". So he hung on the phone whilst he did this, watched the page upload, and I bought them. Bingo. Paid PayPal.

Just got an email confirming my order! :D

On the assumption that they actually arrive, Planet X seem to be a top outfit.

Planet X, already quite high, have just reached the top of the tree in my estimation there!

Yep, top outfit, the 99% of the time they get it right they get it very right, the 1% of times they don't still makes them far better than most!

Oh I see, well maybe they've had more of them come in since then who knows. After I ordered they were 'out of stock' so, you know ...
  • Bugger! It was me wot asked them to mark the Campags down to 99 quid, and I didn't have access to t'internet the next day so missed out. They only had 9 sets. Can anybody verify whether these wheels are any faster (measured, not perceived) than multi-spoked Open Pro's?They would have made a good, virtually disposable crit wheelset - athough the rim thickness is less, so they're probably not as bombproof.

If they are faster then I'd be tempted to build up some Kinlin 30mm's (as used on the model B and C) onto some Soul hubs.

Are the Shimano versions really only 10 speed ?..... I am running 9 speed 105 and these would be great winter training wheels (especially on special) but not if they won't work on my bike.

    Thanks

  • I'd be wary of using these wheels as daily drivers/winter trainers. The braking surface is quite thin so will wear out quickly (more so over winter), and there were reliability issues with the planet-X hub (which might be fixed now).

Thanks Nelson, I've already got lightweight summer wheels - so I am definitely just after good winter trainers ... so perhaps they are not for me (leaving aside the 9/10 speed issue).

Loads of people in my club use them as winter / everyday wheels and they are all happy with them!

You should be okay for 9 speed

  • I put mine on yesterday. I asked for the 9 speed version as I run Tiagra and they seem fine. If you ask them specifically they do still have some of the older 9sp hubs around - drop them an email.

    A few points:
    - easy to put tyres on (Bontrager Hardcases), unlike some wheels in this price bracket
    - need extra long (6cm) tubes, which turned into additional expense. I used 4cm on my previous wheels
    - clicky freewheel but not a really LOUD one, thankfully
    - goodlooking wheels but there are no decals at all, so they don't scream bling in the way that I would've liked with stickers, chevrons and logos saying RACE MAXXOUT DOMINATOR MUTHAFOCKA TEAM ISSUE etc. I'm tacky like that.

Well, my new Model B wheels have arrived, and if they are as good as Planet X customer service, then they'll be the best wheels I'll ever buy.

Right from the time I emailed asking about availability their response has been faultless. Plenty of emails regarding order status, and delivery very quick indeed.

The wheels theselves look pretty good, certainly better than a price of £99 would suggest. QR skewers looked a bit weak, so migt upgrade those. Time will tell on quality but I think these will turn out to be a bit of a bargain.

It just so happens I have a part set of Mavic rims decals (Mavic ES), so might dress them up a bit.

Very pleased. Well done Planet-X :D
