Is Carrera a dirty word?

I've just started riding and have a Carrera Valour. I bought it about 5 years ago (when I was going to start  ) and even then it had some reasonable kit on it. Ok it's not the last word in sophistication but I didn't think it was sensible to spend £650+ as a beginner and there really wasn't much else about for the same money. Looking at the current model it appears to be much better value/looking and they also sell it in small so may be worth consideration.
Sadly I'm no expert but other than a terrible saddle it rides just fine. I will change this but other than that the only thing I've done has been to buy some SPD pedals (Shimano M520's) so that I could go clipless.
Personally I think it has been fantastic value and great way to get into biking so go for it. Even if you upgrade a year or so from now it won't have been money wasted.0 -
I went budget before upgrading and glad I did. I went for a Trek (Pilot 1.0 - £500) which was excellent to get me into riding more often, and now it's my winter/commuting bike.
The only problem with it I've found - and probably the same with most bikes at that price level is that the wheels aren't very good. Whilst I actually know very little about what makes a good wheel, or a fast wheel - I do know that spokes aren't supposed to snap on them very often. I've had 3 go in the last 8 months (bike is now 2 yrs old and a few thosand miles of wear) - which is as many times as I've had a puncture!!
The review of the Carrera looks excellent, I'd have been interested to see how a BTwin (Decathlon's own brand) would've faired against it.0
