I've got some stuff on my website about getting into racing...you may find it useful
www.xcenduro.co.uk
British Cycling and Xcracer.com have useful calendars of events. The Brownbacks series is also in your are...accessible by car anyway and offers excellent grass roots mountain bike racing, it's cheap and is well run and they're a friendly bunch. Not sure if there is an age limit though. There are lots of series down South that offer younger age categories though such as the Thetford Summer and Winter series.
