how much of an upgrade in comfort /weight reduction does moving from an alloy to carbon seat post represent? I have an alu framed bike with carbon forks.

    Comfort - greatly
    Weight - negligible

Someone will be along directly to tell you carbon seatposts are prone to breaking and not worth the bother.
I disagree, only my opinion but I have fitted a Specialized pave on my road bike and a Ritchey WCS on my hardtail mtb and I reckon they are a very worthwhile upgrade.

I fitted one to my pompino, which was pretty forgiving to begin with, but coming from mtbing i found the 23mm tyres a bit harsh!

The post is a massive comfort boost, as for weight, i don't care, the frame and forks are steel, so a few grams on a seat post are moot really!!!!!
