Ah, so that's what it was. Cycled down Palatine Road as per usual yesterday, and wondered why there were Police standing around at the junction with Barlow Moor Road, stopping people going down it.0

Called a sinkhole isn't it?
Happens due to water making the soil go all crappy and lose it's structure or something I think. Weburbanist.com (or was it webecoist.com?) had a big article on them, with lots of cool pictures.
