Ah, so that's what it was. Cycled down Palatine Road as per usual yesterday, and wondered why there were Police standing around at the junction with Barlow Moor Road, stopping people going down it.
Happens due to water making the soil go all crappy and lose it's structure or something I think. Weburbanist.com (or was it webecoist.com?) had a big article on them, with lots of cool pictures.
That one at Monticello dam looks cool in the last link that kyoukoku posted.
