Cycle Challenge advice

I am a regular cyclist and I am known at work for being the guy who cycles 20 miles every day and have been put forward for a challenge we are running at work this work which is a challenge of who can go the furest in one hour on a static cycle machine. No problem so I thought but I am now worried as seriously quick times have been recorded, such as 1 hour 32 km, rpms of 125. My question therefore is, I do not use a cycle trainer but how should I go about getting the best performance, is it low resistance fast rpm, or go manic for the first half hour to record a good distance then ease up, or treat it like a time trial and go flat out.

Obviously a static bike is a very different ride to your commuting bike, but what sort of time do you get for the 20 miles into work?

The reason I ask is that 32km in an hour is just under 20mph.

I would get yourself to a gym and ride a static bike before the challenge if you can so you know what to expect. I would say go fast rpm, then, seeing how you feel, quick flatout bursts with recovery of high cadence would do the trick.

Most of what i've done recently has been on spinning bikes, and excersize bikes in the gym, being at uni and not having my bike with me in halls.

But when i do distance goals, i find it best to keep resistance up and usually rpm around 100-130, and just keep the pedals spinning. if i start to tire, drop the resitance and spin faster to change it up a little. as pompeypoppy said flatout bursts. but i find it relatively comfortable to get 30km+ in an hour.

Try to hit a reasonably high cadence and hold it

it will hurt, but you do want to beat these people dont you?
