Camping near 7 Stanes - recomendations please
Hi, we're up for a long weekend in June, the current plan is to ride
Kirroughtree, Innerleithen, & Glentress
Can someone recommend a campsite? I googled and found stuff in the Peebles area that looked OK. Local pubs / food / food shopping, shortish journeys to the trails mentioned (we'll be in cars) and any other plus points please.

Can`t recommend a campsite but just letting you know that Kirroughtree is 120miles from Glentress/Inners. It`s the best part of a 2.5 hour journey.
If I were you i`d either stay at Peebles and just do Glentress and Inners. Or stay in Dumfries and do Kirroughtree, Ae, Dalbeattie, Mabie.
If the long journey doesn`t bother you then happy days.0 -
we stayed at rosetta. was very nice and bike friendly. however wasn't very secure.
2 mins from peebles town center, 5 mins from the hub at glentress.
this year we're staying here http://www.crossburncaravans.co.uk/
supposed to be better security and facilities. I think its closer to the hub and a tad further from the town center but not by much.

Personnally I'd be heading for Mabie, Ae, Dalbeattie and Kirroughtree. Glentress and Inners get mad-busy most weekends.0

Glentress was very very quite when we went last year, hardly saw anyone on the trails!
we went for a week and a half just after the summer holls and were pleasantly surprised
Def wouldn't go in the summer holidays though. bet its crazy then!0 -
Can't recommend this place enough: http://www.kippfordholidaypark.co.uk/output/home.asp
About 200yards from Dalbeattie.
Mabie and Ae about 20 minutes in the car and Kirroughtree's about 40 minutes away/0 -
Glentress isn't so busy that it's a problem. You're not going to feel isolated, but there's not so many people that it detracts from the riding, even in the bike park.0

I live 5min drive from Mabie and Dalbeattie, and would recommend
http://www.gorsebank.com/gorsebank_eque ... gwams.html
They have excellent Wigwams there for people wanting basic but comfy and affordable somewhere to get the head down places.
Alternatively http://www.thebreakpad.com/ have excellent facilities in Castle Douglas, and they own the bike shop at Kirroughtree and also do bike and rider transportation to the best rides.
At Mabie, there is the Mabie House Hotel who do great packages for riders, and they have little cabins at the back, which are actually "right next" to the rides.
Give me a PM if you want any details
Cheers

I second the gorsebank wigwams near dalbeattieWhy would I care about 150g of bike weight, I just ate 400g of cookies while reading this?0

there's some great advice here thanks
our trip planning has descended into an argument about which trails we should do in 4 days with an uplift booked for Innerleithen on the Sunday. Obviously that's a lot of trails hundreds of miles apart and no concensus.
Happy days...0 -
Sorry, youve lost me there
Hundreds of miles apart the rides are not!
If you want some advice here is the perfect itinary for 4 days in this area IMO
Arrive Dalbeattie
Day 1. Cycle Dalbeattie, have lunch, go to Mabie(10min) cycle Mabie, stay at Dalbeattie wigwams and do a night trail run.
Day2. Drive to Kirroughtree 34miles, stay at the B&B there, ride Kirroughtree in morning, and if you have time do Glentrool at night.
Day3: Drive to Ae(57miles), stay there and cycle the Ae route which will take you all day. An alternative would be to go to Drumlanrig here, which is great if you want a nice day out also, lots to see and do and the trails are relaxed or frantic depending what you want to do for that day.
Day 4: Drive to Innerleithen (46miles) cycle that and then get pickup and head home.

Alternatively, you could stay near Kirroughtree as a base
(i know an excellent bike friendly cottage that people rent, cheaply), and do Mabie, Ae, Dalbeattie, Glentrool and Kirroughtree, which are all within an hours drive of base.
