Hi All,

I have only been mountain biking and am looking to upgrade from my Cape wrath 24 which up to now has done me well. I was looking to upgrade parts but soon realised all in I may be just as well buying a new bike.

The Question: While at the Hub at Glentress I noticed that they sell their hire bikes after 35 hires, Kona Caldera 09 for £450 and Genesis Altitude 20 £550. Am I best buying something new for the £550 down mark or would the ex hire get me the best deal???

Let me know what you think and SORRY for what is another What bike thread.

Alex

Hey, neonblue, at least you posted this in the right area!! The hire bikes could be a killer deal, if they have been ridden with care, on easy-ish terrain, and well maintained.

Take a look at the other bikes for hire, that are similar models to what you want to buy. If they appear all beaten up, and generally in poor condition, then they've probably just be polished up for the sale.

IF however, they look alrite, the wheels spin nicely, the forks are smooth, and the seals look alrite, it's probably fair to say they've been looked after.

It's too easy to buy a lemon, so make sure you properly look around the bike your after, and anything seems off, avoid.

The hub does seem to take good care of the bikes, I nearly bought one of last year's konas but decided against it in the end. Just treat it exactly like you would any other used bike, tbh.

  • the hub might take care of the bikes... but do the people that ride them?

although - when we were up there, the plank that was "washing them" had the power jet hose all over the BB, headset, hubs and forks.

thanks for everyones replies so far, as you guys have rightly pointed out its only going to be a good buy if its in good condition.
I've tried to do a bit of research on the bikes but haven't found masses of info, whats the general view towards these two models? I'm going to test them out in a weeks time.
