Cyclocross or Road

I've been commuting (14 mile round trip) on my orange 5 with slicks for a while now. Whilst its been ok I'd rather not be using it for my commute hence been thinking about getting a road bike. Have discounted hybrid as i want something that's fast that allows me to keep pace with my fellow commuters and traffic.

If going for road bike are the rims sufficinet to withstand some sketchy manouvres up and down kerbs etc or would cyclocross be more durable? Main differences as far as i can see are stronger rims?, higher bottom bracket and slightly larger front triangle you seem to paying quite a bit more for cyclocross. In reality the the tyres would be changed to slicks and would essentially be used as a road bike.

In summary just looking for a durable robust road bike that can take some abuse from time to time- any advice?

ps- obviously a newbie to the road bike thing- they all just look so fragile but attractively light and fast compared to my orange.

Cheers

    Have a ride of each.

The cyclocross is a little more robust & can normally take mudguards etc, making it a great winter bike too.

Road bike will more than likely be lighter and a little faster too.

I recently built myself a CX/road hybrid, CX frame & forks, brakes with road gearing and wheels its wicked fast but more than able to nip off road when needed and it climbs like a mountain goat thanks to the MTB rear cassette.

buy a road bike and get a set of handbuilts or get the wheels hand finished at purchase.

I have handbuilts on my pompino and i give it a good thrashing up and down kerbs, and do small drops on it and they've held up fine!!!!

Or you could just not go up and down kerbs!
