Are Bottom Bracket cups essential?

I recently upgraded to a Centaur chainset from the FSA one that came with my bike. I had the local bike shop carry this out for me as they also had to change the bottom bracket.

I noticed when I got it back that there were no BB cups fiited and was wondering if these are essential and wether I should get some fitted.

Sorry if this question is a bit naive as I am fairly new to the mechanics of bikes.

Is that even possible (having no BB cups!?)

Centaur bottom bracket uses an integrated spindle. No cups needed. Cranks attach to the spindle, whereas your FSA cranks attached differently.

Don't worry, your frame does have BB cups, but not in the conventional sense - there are a couple of bearing holders screwed into either side of the BB shell - if they weren't fitted your chainset would be rather loose!
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

I like that. "rather loose". It would probably be something you would notice.

In reality "cups" and "BB bearings" pretty much refer to the same thing.
