Creaky seat post

Hi all
Ive got a giant defy 2.5 and it's started creaking when giving it some beans, but only when Im sitting on the seat, therefore I deduct it must be the seat post ...
I changed the height of the seat recently and noticed the creaking, so I tightened it up a bit however it still creaks. Im reluctant to tighten it any more as the 2.5 has a carbon post which I don't want to damage.
Is there any way I can verify that it's the seat post and/or is there a limit for how tight the seat post fastening should be ?
Cheers

Have you raised it beyond its max height marker, or maybe just got a bit too close to it on the safe side?
You could take it out and give the post & the tube a good clean so that you've got a good clean even contact round the whole post. Look for the recommended carbon seat tube grease too that gives an even grip and should allow it be tightened a bit less.0 -
Have you checked that the saddle rails are properly secured? A loose bolt there could cause a creak0

A friends bike was doing the exact same. It was a carbon post into a carbon frame When we looked into it there was quite a bit of post going into the tube. Not sure if this was significant.
However I lightly greased the post. i.e. wiped some grease on and then removed it with a cloth.
Put the post back in and hey presto the creaking was gone. Told him to keep an eye for post slippage. That was a couple of weeks ago and since then no creaks and no slippage of the post.0 -
Thanks for the info all. I'll check the saddle and make sure the post is clean and lube it up
I'll post back the results tomorrow when I've had chance to test them out.0
